Australia and Energy Efficiency Programs

June 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 202

Efficient use of energy in Australia is one of the major projects of the country's government in fighting the impact of climate change. The continuous increase of greenhouse gas emissions in the country in the past years has ignited a number of intensive projects on energy management that were initiated by the government. Among these are programs for community purposes and low-income groups and energy efficiency information grants.

Local councils and non-profit community groups are the targets of the Community Energy Efficiency Program. This primarily aims to offer matched funding for these targets' own projects that will help them have buildings, lighting systems, and other facilities that use energy in a more economical way. It's also expected to encourage them to adopt better practices in energy management starting from their groups going out to the larger communities.

There is also the Low Income Energy Efficiency Program that helps organizations in the government, business, and community sectors to do something for low-income households to promote better management of power usage. In this particular initiative, the supporting organizations evaluate actual approaches to assist low-income households towards an increased level of energy efficiency. They are tasked to gather and study information that will be vital to the coming projects and future policies of the government regarding energy and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

One major necessity in helping everyone in the country to have more energy-efficient households, offices, and facilities is to have accurate and detailed information about energy and all other elements related to its usage and in minimizing carbon footprint. To boost the satisfaction of this need, the government also launched the Energy Efficiency Information Grants Program. This is an initiative worth AUD 40 million. It is dedicated to industry and non-profit groups that can deliver detailed and useful data on how to have more energy-saving operations for all companies and organizations. These data especially addresses the small- and medium-scale business entities and community groups.

All these three are merit-based projects. Companies and organizations that want to be part of these programs need to send their project proposals or applications to the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency or its assigned committee. The project proposals or applications are subject to evaluation according to certain merit criteria. Aside from the Department's designated authorities, industry experts are also invited to assess the merits of each proposal submitted. Grants are then released after the thorough assessment process.

These and all the other efforts towards the efficient use of energy in Australia are all ultimately aimed at having a more sustainable environment and minimizing the impact of carbon emissions.

Energy Australia and other power companies in Australia have their own programs to support energy efficiency in the country. Visit Switchwise to know more about these power suppliers.
