3 Ways to Reduce Dependence on Oil

October 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 233

Repeatedly we are hearing about oil spills, rising prices on oiland exhaustion of non-renewable resources. Countries like United States eat up a rich meat of oil resources because they have one weapon – money. Other countries like India and China lick up a big part to feed their burgeoning population. In today's world, oil has become either the cause of disagreement or foundation of friendship based on greed. Poor countries are getting poor because of lack of opportunities, access to resources and corruption while the richer are filling their dens. This bickering and greediness will ultimately result in zero returns because fossil fuels are not going to last for eternity. The solution is personally taking the responsibility to reduce our dependence on oil.

Venting anger, frustration, remaining alienated from the situation or hoping for a better future is not going to help. To blindfold your conscious mind waiting for God's miracle is a stupid thing to do. Better, start reducing your oil dependence at the earliest by considering a lifestyle with least use of petroleum derived products.

Use of petroleum is not just limited to filling up gas tanks. Nearly 71% of the oil goes into transportation of goods and passengers. The less we fly & drive and more we transport the good ourselves, a radical change will be observed on the usage of oil in transportation.

* Omit plastic bags, a petroleum derived product. Plastic bags can never be recycled, harms the wildlife, enters the food chain and poisons our food. Our lands and oceans are filling up with plastic landfills and garbage that is too significant to be cleaned. Rather, try using cloth or paper alternatives.

* Use natural fibres including cotton, hemp, silk, linen, rayon, wool, ramie, and tencel. Artificial clothing made from polyester, nylon, and other forms of synthetic are petroleum derived and may involve the use of chemicals. To buy silk or wool is not workable since it amounts to cruelty to animals and are expensive.

* Discontinue the use of aromatic products and perfumes derived from petrochemicals. These include deodorants, lotions, hair spray, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, candles, air fresheners, aromatic cleaning product, etc.

Other than the above, petroleum is used in every imaginable good produced on this earth. Right from, aircrafts, medicines, clothing, phones, food, paints, make up and office stationery, petroleum is used to a certain degree in every product. Go organic to reduce the use of petroleum in your daily life. Start walking, make use of car pool, and switch to bicycling for the desired result. In the meantime, governments fighting over oil will continue to bicker over rising oil prices.
