How to Stand Up to a Bully

March 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 109

Bullying, something that not only our children are going through, but adults are dealing with bullies every day too. It's the boss that yells at you, it's when a friend tries to force you to be or do something that you don't want to do, or it's when someone makes you feel horrible for the purpose of them feeling good; Bullying is real and doesn't have an age limit nor does it discriminate against gender, race, religion or creed. Its something that, unfortunately, will never go away so while we are working at ways to Stop Bullying lets teach people How to Stand Up to a Bully.

Being bullied is scary and the thought of standing up to a one can be even scarier. Bullies focus on people they believe are vulnerable and weak, according to Webster's Dictionary, which defines a Bully as the act of intimidating a weaker person to make them do something (2012). When a bully's behavior is no longer accepted or tolerated their behavior will change. Having two energetic boys only two years apart I experienced a few fights and arguments in our home from time to time and the older they got I began to notice what caused the fights and I knew that I needed to nip this behavior in the bud. What my boys called 'teasing' I called 'bullying' and I wasn't tolerating it. Just like most siblings they would say things to each other until someone cried or they would 'pick on' each other until the other got so mad and a fight began. Just like every one else, neither liked to be bullied and nor did they like behaving like one and I came up with Conflict Resolutions tips for them to implement in their relationship.

Taking A Stand Against being Bullied:

Know your worth

Question negative statements (don't just allow others to say just anything to you)

Ignore the negative statements (especially when untrue)

Dont take bullying personal because its internal hatred that fuels bullying

Learn a discipline that teaches you how to defend yourself (not necessarily to fight but to have the confidence that you can defend yourself if needed)

Don't fly off of the handle when you are attacked...take a minute recoup and then respond

Speak up!

These steps are simple and whether you're six or sixty they'll work for you. Bullies are fueled by our reactions and how we react to a bully when they attack us will determine the dynamics of that relationship from that point on. Misery Loves Company and by nature there are people who get a rush from others misery; they feed off of others hurt BUT if there's nothing to feed off of they'll starve and quit coming back.

Standing up to bullying takes courage, courage that you already have inside just need help bringing out. No one deserves to be bullied and the more bullies are shown that they can not just treat people however they want things will change for the good.

Honestly,
