Are Old Beliefs Holding You Back?

April 02, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 132

We all grow up learning the belief systems of others. Our parents, schools, the media and even religion can make us believe there is only one right way of doing things. Everything else is wrong or a threat, so we shouldn't even consider it. But, is that really true?

The answer is a resounding no. If there were only one right way to live your life, history wouldn't be strewn with great creations, magnificent leaders and celebrated ideas. Sure, there are some fantastically horrible things that have happened in the world, and it's not a good idea to ignore that they happened.

But, is the glass really half empty? Is that how you want to live the rest of your life? Thinking about how bad things can get? Do you realize the power of the mind? What we think about life is the life we are going to have. So, if we think that life is unfair, brutal and a long trek toward oblivion, well, that's exactly the kind of life we're going to lead.

It's the same with certain beliefs. If we think that's the only right way of doing things, we limit ourselves terribly. How many of the following beliefs do you consider the only way of doing things:

Everyone Should Get Married, Buy A House and Have Kids

This is crazy think. Sure, there's nothing wrong with doing all of the above; but in no way is that the only way you can have a successful and glorious life. In fact, if you think that's the only way to be successful, you have effectively locked yourself into a very narrow box.

I Have To Go To College And Get A Good Job Afterwards

Really? How's that working out for you right about now? Here's a radical thought that lots of people get real angry about: a college degree in no way means you are educated. In fact, in millions of cases, it basically means you've been indoctrinated and you don't even know it.

Do you want your financial success to be in someone else's hands? Because when you go to work for a company, that's exactly what happens. That's not to say this is all bad; I want to stress that. For some people, it works. But for too long the people for whom this works have been telling everyone else that this is the only way things should be done. The truth?

It might be right for them, but that doesn't mean it's right for you.

Be Brave

Not subscribing to certain ingrained societal beliefs upsets some of the people who do, so be prepared for that. The choice is yours to make.

Do you want to make them happy, or yourself?
