Going to Work After Using Alcohol or Drugs Threatens Lives

February 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 166

Going to work when you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a dangerous choice. Alcohol and drug usage can impair how quickly you react to things and cloud your judgement. When you are drinking or doing drugs it becomes impossible for you to perform your essential job functions.

It is never a good idea to go to work impaired however it is especially dangerous when your job function includes operating heavy machinery or driving a vehicle that carries passengers.

You can prevent yourself from going to work impaired however you are not able to control the decisions of those around you. If your co-worker comes to work under the influence they are threatening your safety as well as their own.

If you work with someone who comes to work under the influence here are some actions you may consider taking:

Report the behavior to a supervisor immediately. Even if you are only suspicious they are impaired tell your boss. Do not feel pressured to confront the issue yourself. If you are not in a supervisor role, it is not your job to speak with co-workers about their actions directly. When you report suspicious behavior make sure the incident has been documented and the person has been given a drug of alcohol test if possible.

This warning is also important for employees who perform a job that requires them to be on-call and ready to go to work at any time. Having a drink while on-call may seem like no big deal but in the event that the employee is then called into work it can be very dangerous. Not only is it dangerous for everyone the employee works with and for but it can also be dangerous if they have to drive themselves to work after drinking. If you are someone who has to work while on-call it is best to avoid all alcohol and drugs during that time. You never know when you will be needed at work and it's not worth the gamble.

Drug use can become challenging to handle in the event of prescription drug use. When an employee is using prescription pain killers or other medication for an injury they may not be abusing these drugs but they are still being impaired by them.

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself is to be aware of strange behavior in your co-workers and address any suspicions right away. The sooner you react the less likely it is that the impaired employee will injure themselves or others on the job.
