Develop a Better Business Attitude Towards Your Personal Life

May 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 189

Many of us are ultra-professionals in the workplace and we even dress the part. Professionalism in the workplace is something that is expected at all times. It is expected when scheduling meetings, following up on an email, getting to the Chairman's meeting on time, getting to work on time and returning phone calls to our Managers or even Client's in a timely manner. The phones are answered in a professional manner and we limit personal interactions in the workplace. After all it is unprofessional to mix business and pleasure. Not returning a Client's phone call until three days later would not only cost the company a huge loss in finances, it would also cost us our job. We speak in a professional tone to our supervisors and to our co-workers. We respect the Client's and we speak to them with such accord. Ultimately, being professional is also an act of showing respect. We respect our jobs, our supervisors and overall our work environment. Suffice to say we are on our toes at our place of business.

However, unlike our business life, we treat our personal life with a measure of unprofessionalism. We sometimes treat our friends, families and our relationships with extreme disregard. We forget to return phone calls until three days later or sometimes not at all. What would have happened if that was a Client? Are we so busy that we forget to cultivate the relationships that are important to us and would help to sustain us when life gets us down? When we treat individuals in our personal in an unprofessional manner, we are taking them for granted. We are basically letting them know that they are important only when we are not at work. None of us would like to feel as if we are being taken for granted. As adults we should be showing respect to those in our personal lives even more so than to those in our business lives. Individuals in our business lives are not our friends and confidants and they can fire us, turn on us and leave us out in the cold with just the shirts on our backs. When that happens we are literally on our own to face the music because we did not treat individuals in our personal life with the same respect and professionalism that we showed to those in our business life.

Yes, life can get busy and we get bogged down at work, but it all comes down to what's important to us. If losing our husbands, partners, and good friends is not important well being busy with work is fine. But

Developing and having a balance between our work and our personal life is important. Our personal life is far more important than our work life. Many may disagree with that statement, but we work so that we can live, not live so that we can work.

Everything that we do is an area of our lives. So if we focus on only one area alone then we won't feel complete and content within ourselves. Our whole individual being should be our focus and not just one area. Therefore, by working on establishing strong relationships in our personal life, we will be able to be balanced at work and have a higher level of functionality.
