What is the Law Behind PAT Testing?

November 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 178

Even at this comparatively late stage of the early 21st century, there is still a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding when it comes to PAT testing and the law. To a certain extent this is understandable given the matter being something of a grey area, but on the other hand with a little common sense it becomes immediately clear how and why PAT relates directly to the law and is considered the UK national standard.

With regard to the actual legislation passed by the government, for decades now it has been a legal requirement for all business owners, landlords and so on to ensure that all of their devices, circuits and appliances have been safe for the use of employees, tenants, customers etc. This is therefore the black and white law – appliances must be safe and it is the responsibility of the employer or landlord in question to ensure this.

The grey area begins however when it comes to PAT as while using PAT services and tools has become widely recognised as the industry standard, PAT itself isn’t actually a legal requirement. The government does not in fact make any specific suggestions or demands as to how said electrical appliance safety must be tested and ensured, which in turn means that PAT is not officially connected with law or legislation.

Nevertheless, over several decades the UK’s most elite electrical professionals have built and practices the PAT testing system, which is effectively the only one of its kind to guaranteed safety and performance to the level the government demands. As such, to opt for PAT testing is to choose a route to full legislative compliance and thus ensure the business or premises is in line with the law.

With tools the likes of the fluke 1651 multifunction tester found at http://www.pat-services.co.uk/fluke-1651b-multifunction-installation-tester-1515.htm now readily available, more and more businesses and offices are carrying out their PAT testing requirements the DIY way. Sadly however, this is in no way the preferable route to compliance with the law as it is only those with long-term experience and dedication that are able to carry out tests to the required level.

Or to put it another way, it isn’t as simple as buying a Fluke 1651 from www.pat-services.co.uk/fluke-1651b-multifunction-installation-tester-1515.htm and whizzing around the office for half an hour.

The law is extremely strict when it comes to electrical safety and the only realistic way of remaining in line with applicable laws is to use officially certified PAT testing services as and when needed – period.
