Thermal Imaging 101

November 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 157

Thermal imaging is perhaps one of the most recent PAT testing and inspection standards to hit the mainstream, though is already considered 100% mandatory by the vast majority of PAT professionals. However, there remain large numbers that are still largely unaware of the basics as to what thermal imagining consists of and why it is used, which calls for a simple 101 guide to the basics:

Thermal imaging is the name given to the technology whereby a state of the art camera equipped with infra-red technology is able to see beyond physical walls and surfaces to detect sources of heat underneath. Improvements in the technology have made it possible to see deeper and more clearly below the surface than ever before, while the technology itself is becoming more readily available, affordable and easy to use by the day.

The use of thermal imaging cameras has become a standard part of the general PAT inspection of buildings, which is the process whereby electric safety is tested using a tool like the Megger 1720 - to ensure a safety standard required by law. The role of thermal imagining is to look below the surface of the walls, floors, ceilings and so on to detect areas of excess heat and then allow the engineer to investigate as necessary. In terms of electrical installations, excessive levels of heat usually amount to a fault or perhaps a flaw in the installation or the circuit, which if left unattended can lead to serious accidents, injuries or even death. Thermal imaging is seen as the very best way of warding off countless accidents before they have the chance to occur.

As thermal imaging serves as a means by which to increase the safety and cover of a standard electrical checkup, it should essentially be used in any environment where PAT testing is of the utmost importance and used alongside a tool like the Megger MFT 1720 – details for which can be found online at www.pat-services.co.uk/megger-mft1720-multifunction-tester-kit-2439.htm.  This therefore means that every single industrial environment, standard workplace and commercial setting could benefit from occasional thermal imaging, as could the properties of landlords and anyone with tenants.

Technically yes, as with specialist services on the internet now offering the cheapest and easiest to use readers ever created, it is perfectly possible for a non-professional to own and operate these devices. However, it takes a significant degree of specialist knowledge to interpret the readings themselves and to know how to identify any given risks.
