Poor PAT = No PAT

November 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 180

There is something of an all-too common consensus across the UK whereby all PAT testing services and testers are of the same calibre and thus offer the same results. In the minds of thousands of business owners and landlords, PAT testing represents nothing more than a box to be ticked and therefore the way in which said box is ticked really doesn’t matter. They assume that by taking on the services of any apparent PAT specialist, the outcome will be just as good as if they’d chosen any other on the market.

Sadly, however, things really aren’t quite as simple as this.

First and foremost it is important to look at the kind of tools and testers on the PAT marker today, which have come a long way since the 80s to say the least. Glance at the multifunction testers for example and it should be clear in an instant that state of the art testers have taken on a whole new life in the 21st century, which are of paramount importance for 21st century appliances, circuits and demands. Substitute an elite installation tester at http://www.pat-services.co.uk/17th-edition-tester-part-p-25/17th-edition-installation-testers-22.html for example with a lesser model from 30 years ago and the chances of it performing with accuracy and thus safety is minimal to say the least.

Then comes the PAT testing companies themselves as while the vast majority will always be above board and right in line with national standards, others can claim no such thing. Just as some are brand new to the industry and yet to gain the experience required to do an elite job, others are practicing today the same way they did in 1986 and not making allowances for the way things have changed.

In both instances, the result is one of poor-quality PAT testing.

The problem here is that poor PAT testing is effectively about as much use as no PAT testing at all, as if a device or circuit has not been tested properly, it may as well not have been tested in the first place. Sadly, it will of course always be the end-users that find this out the hard way when an appliance fails and causes accident or injury.

PAT stickers can be very reassuring but also very misleading at the same time. It really doesn’t take a great deal of effort to vet any given provider by way of reputation and approach, which in turn can lead to peace of mind the likes of which is priceless.
