Poor PAT – A Risk Not Worth Taking

November 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

The fact that PAT testing has not yet been made a legal requirements means that tens of thousands of businesses and residences across the UK still do not take the steps required to PAT test all of their appliances, sockets and circuits. The assumption is one whereby PAT testing is not required by law, therefore in theory it cannot possibly be of grave importance.

Sadly however, it is exactly such a way of thinking that directly results in hundreds of accidents every month of varying degrees of severity.

First and foremost, just because the law doesn’t demand PAT testing as such, what it does demand is an adequate level of testing and safety assurance of all business and building owners in terms of their electrical contents. Given the way in which PAT testing is universally regarded as the UK’s only standard by which to guarantee a legal level of health and safety measures are taken, it should effective be considered a legal requirement in its own right.

That being said, even if PAT testing wasn’t the standard and the government imposed no such legislation, would it really be worth risking the health and safety of workers or tenants just for the sake of a small saving? It really just comes down to a simple matter of principles here as to whether the tiny cost of PAT testing is too much to pay to ensure that others are not seriously  hurt as a result of faulty or failing electronics.

Of course, testing appliances to an appropriate extend is very much part of UK law and therefore to overlook or ignore the importance of such testing is to take a risk that really isn’t worth it. Using tools like the megger 1710 aka the megger mft 1710 enables a PAT professional to rule out hundreds of potentially dangerous incidents, which could not only leave a person injured or worse, but wreak havoc on a business or landlord in a legal and financial sense.

To overlook PAT or to opt for a lacklustre PAT testing service in favour of savings is to effectively roll the dice with fate and hope for the best. It is largely impossible to predict when and where a fault will occur without professional testing, therefore shy of the divine ability to see into the future, the professional PAT tester is really the only viable option.
