PAT Testing Myths

November 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 156

PAT Testing is Required by Law

Perhaps the most common myth of all surrounding PAT testing, the truth of the matter is actually entirely to the contrary. The reason for the misconception is the way in which the law does indeed demand that each and every supplied product and appliance along with electrical installation be tested for the safety of its users, though contrary to popular belief there are no specifics as to how this must be done, when, how often or who by. As such, PAT has become the national standard for testing to a legal level in the UK and has thus become interpreted as a legal requirement, as to undergo or carry out PAT testing is essentially the only way of ensuring that all appliances, features and so on are up to the necessary standards of safety.

PAT Testing Must Be Carried Out Annually

Not only is the above myth incorrect in terms of PAT being a requirement in the first place, by is also fundamentally inaccurate in terms of such frequency. Contrary to popular belief once again, PAT testing comes with no specific frequency with which the tests should be carried out as this will differ for each and every appliance and circuit across the nation. Frequency of PAT testing will depend on the item or circuit itself, where it is located, how old, how often used, at how much risk to the elements and countless other considerations. A power tool on a building site for example will be a far greater risk than a kettle used once per week in a secondary staffroom – the latter therefore needing much less frequent testing. The annual “rule of thumb” guideline has basically been made up as one to follow if unsure, though the best advice is to seek advice on a product by product basis.

PAT Testing Can Only Be Carried Out by Professionals

Essentially false, though a certain degree of training and knowledge is necessary. This will again depend on the extent of the task at hand and its involvement as while on one hand an amateur would have no chance of successfully PAT testing a factory floor with a Seaward Supernova Elite (http://www.pat-services.co.uk/seaward-supernova-elite-pat-tester-64.htm), thousands are tooling up to take care of testing for domestic projects and DIY tasks.

With online sites now offering incredible PAT kits as prestigious as the Supernova Elite which can be viewed at www.pat-services.co.uk/seaward-supernova-elite-pat-tester-64.htm for wholesale prices, chances are that more than ever before will be going the DIY way.
