In-House or Outsourced PAT Testing

November 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

There are technically only two options available to a business or property owner looking to carry out a series of PAT tests – those being to outsource the job to the professional, or assign it to be carried out in-house. Despite the fact that more small businesses and individuals are choosing to go the DIY route that ever before, those on the other side remain adamant that there is no comparison to the professional route and to think otherwise is to stare danger right in the face.

In reality however there are, as always, both pros and cons to both of the options on offer, making it largely a matter of common sense and personal preference as to which fits the bill better for any given situation:

In-House Testing

With regard to the in-house PAT testing approach, the first and foremost benefit is of course that of no having to call in and therefore pay third parties to carry out the task on behalf of the business. Over the course of years the savings can stack up to quite an amount, while at the same time those responsible for the task become more and more well-versed in the practice and thus produce better and better results. Given the way in which even the best devices in the business are now more affordable than ever via online specialists and user-friendliness is also skyrocketing and the DIY approach certainly seems an attractive and viable one.

In the case of cons however, there will always be the small matter of initially investing in the required tools in the first place.  A Fluke 1654B Multifunction Installation Tester, for example, could prove pricey for small businesses with limited capital. In addition, few businesses currently have staff-members with the kind of skills and knowledge required to carry out PAT testing to a competent level, meaning an additional investment of both time and money in training.

Outsourced Testing

The immediate benefit of outsourcing PAT and electrical testing needs is the fact that when the pros turn up, they turn up with an enormous range of the most cutting-edge gear in the world, including the Fluke 1654B as standard. This is complimented with decades of expertise in testing safety, building a package of professionalism that is difficult to rival.

They also have prior knowledge of business and domestic environments across the board, which adds up to a faster, safer and more accurate result than most in-house efforts come close to.
