How to Choose The Best Multimeter

March 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 210

When choosing a multimeter most people will be on the look-out for certain features. You will almost certainly want an accurate meter that will provide you with the level of precision that you require in your electrical testing. For many people digital meters are better than analogue meter because of the higher degree of accuracy provided by a digital meter.

Digital meters provide a read out in numbers which are easier to read than looking at the dial and needle read out of an analogue multimeter. Another advantage of a digital multimeter is that it uses a battery that does not draw power from the circuits it is being used to test. Digital meters can also amplify a current which means that the limits of the spectrum being measured can be extended whereas an analogue meter cannot extend the range in this way so the testing range is more limited.

Apart from accuracy people look for portability and robustness. Digital meters come in a variety of sizes from small pocket sized multimeters to larger handheld professional meters to table top precision meters used where the highest degree of accuracy is required. Some digital multimeters include a protective casing to protect them from the inevitable knocks that come from use around the home or on site. If you have ever had to replace a damaged meter the chances are that you wouldn't now purchase a meter without such a rubberised cover.

Most people want to use their multimeters for various testing activities around the home. Of course many people use multimeters as part of their professional lives. Professionals such as electricians and auto mechanics will use highly accurate digital multitesters such as those made by Fluke.

Are Fluke Multimeters The Best On The Market?

Fluke are a very well known for making high end professional multimeters. These meters are known to be highly accurate and very well made. A professional user who will rely on their meter day in or day out will find these meters to suit their needs better than a series of cheaper meters. While cheaper meters can be easily replaced should they become damaged by hard use, they will not provide the level of accuracy that a Fluke provides. Therefore if you need to test circuits professionally then Fluke should probably be on your shopping list. Whether or not Fluke make the best meters depends on the use to which you want to put your meter. If you are an occasional user then it is probably not worth spending several hundred dollars on a multimeter.

The Best Multimeter For You

Ultimately the best digital multimeter for you is the one that is most suited for the use you are going to put it to. If you only occasionally require an electrical tester then you will probably manage perfectly well with a pocket sized digital meter. If you want to test with great precision on a regular basis you could well find that a professional meter such as a Fluke or Sealey multimeter would meet your needs best.
