Tips For A Healthy Retirement When You Don't Have A Crystal Ball Handy

July 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 193

Life comes with neither a crystal ball nor guarantees about the length of your life, or how your health will be over the years. While you may not have much control over these unknowns, there are plenty of things you can do to set yourself up for a healthy retirement.

Tip #1 - Plan For A Healthy Retirement

What does retirement mean for you? Stopping work and taking it easy? Jumping into an unstructured life of sleeping late and watching TV? Traveling? Volunteering once you find the right opportunity? In retirement, you might not have to adhere to a tight schedule, but you need to think about how you want to spend your time. For many people, work gives a sense of purpose. To keep yourself feeling needed and useful, you need to plan ahead to find activities that offer you some structure.

Just as you won't suddenly find yourself a millionaire at retirement without consistently saving over the years (or winning the lottery), you won't find your rhythm in retirement without planning ahead. If you don't have lifelong interests you want to pursue, start looking for hobbies and activities you might like well before you stop work. You don't have to plan every second, but knowing the general direction you want your retirement to take will get you off to great start. A healthy retirement starts in your head!

Tip #2 -Eat Right For A Healthy Retirement

As you age, your metabolism changes and your body may react differently to foods you enjoyed all your life. You may find it harder to lose weight, find you can't eat spicy foods, or realize you can no longer drink coffee at night. You may not be as agile as you one were, and may find yourself acquiring arthritis and other aches and pains.

Modern research shows that you can greatly affect the quality of your life if you change your patterns by eating healthy foods, cutting down on fats, and perhaps losing weight. Modifying your shopping, cooking, and eating patterns will help keep your weight in line as your metabolism slows, and may help manage your arthritis or other common ailments. If you find yourself newly retired and out of shape, you can still have a healthy retirement with some simple lifestyle changes.

Tip #3 - Exercise For A Healthy Retirement

When your pre-retirement life was busier, you burned more calories as you progressed through the day, in addition to those you burned through other deliberate exercise. Once you stop working and become more sedentary, you need to find some exercise to replace loss of activity. If you have always been a couch potato, there are plenty of options to get you moving at an appropriate pace at health clubs or senior centers.

As you age, whether you are ready to run senior marathons or unable to do certain exercises, your challenge is to discover age-appropriate exercise to keep you agile and fit in line your abilities. Even with physical limitations, an isometric program or some other low impact program will allow you to do what you can to stay fit. Just remember two obvious points: Check with your doctor if you are starting something new and be realistic. Your goal is to stay healthy, not become an Olympic athlete.

Enjoying a great quality of life is within your grasp if you put your mind to it. By thinking, eating, and exercising right, you can enjoy a healthy retirement!
