How to Choose Housing for Older People

July 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 178

When our loved ones get to the age of retirement we need to decide whether they can continue living independently. Often, our elders need a bit of help and support to maintain a happy fulfilling life. There are many housing options for older people that can assist them in making the most of their final years. This article will highlight some key consideration that can help you choose the appropriate housing.

The location

This is the most important decision to make. Consider whether the area is familiar, if it provides easy access to shops and amenities, if it is close enough to friends and family and if it is a safe area to stay.

Local facilities

Aside from shops and essential amenities, it is worth considering whether the area has sufficient access to parks, libraries, community centres, and other facilities that may be useful. It is also worth checking if these facilities are available all year round, especially if you are considering a tourist resort.

Local transport

Getting around is important and the elderly are likely to have to rely on public transport for getting them from A to B. Make sure you look out for the transport options available, including local bus services, any nearby train stations, and any minibus or taxi companies that operate in the area.

Social activities

A good housing option for older people will organise and promote social events. Socialising is very important in improving well-being and the sense of being involved and appreciated. Humans are social beings and the elderly need to socialise just as much as me or you.

Home design

Mobility is something that can be a key consideration for the elderly, especially if they need to use assistance such as wheelchairs or other mobility support. Check to see if there are sufficient measures in place to ensure easy mobility. Lifts, scooters, wide corridors, light switches, toilet facilities, handrails and anything else that could be restricted by lack of mobility should be checked.

Home size

Size does matter. A small home could be beneficial if there are mobility issues. However, it is still important to make sure there is enough space for essential items and that a smaller home doesn't compromise on facilities such as gardens and communal areas. Assess what facilities are required and that will help you decide on an adequately sized home.

Pets and animals

If you need to add pets into the equation then this can limit your choice of suitable homes. Many do accept pets but it worth establishing what pets, if any, are allowed before making your decision.
