How At Home Care for Seniors Can Benefit Clients And Families Alike

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

To many seniors the saying that there's no place like home is very true. In fact, recent studies confirm that almost 90% of seniors want to stay in their homes for as long as possible. With at home care, aging in place becomes a viable option for elderly people.

There are many benefits to getting home care services. Perhaps the most important benefit is that it is much easier for seniors whom are living in their homes to be kept safe from infections and illnesses. This is because it is much easier to control the environment at home, as well as identify and manage the causes of any illness or infection. For instance, if a member of the family has the flu, the spread of viruses and bacteria can be prevented by minimizing his interactions with other members of the family.

This can be very difficult to do in senior care facilities. Viruses and bacteria easily spread in these places because many people are staying in just one place, and they usually use the same facilities such as dining halls and bathrooms. Also, it is much harder to monitor the interactions among clients in these facilities.

Receiving at-home care also enables seniors to live in a more relaxing and comfortable environment. This causes them to have less anxiety and stress-- two main factors that often lead to depression. In contrast, elders staying in senior care facilities are more prone to depression. Research shows that in 2008, around 30 percent of clients in senior care facilities felt depressed, while only 11 percent of seniors receiving home care had similar experiences. The higher rate of depression among elders in senior care facilities may be due to their lack of ability to deal with drastic changes in their environment and daily schedules.

Through at home care services, seniors don't have to go through drastic changes in their lifestyle. Seniors receiving at home care enjoy the benefits of living in a familiar environment and doing the same routines that they've grown accustomed to.

Seniors who are living with or close to their family would find at home care very advantageous. With relatives and friends nearby to give them support and care, seniors can live a happier and healthier life. This will enable them to maintain their social ties and connections with family, friends, and community. As a result, seniors maintain their sense of security and independence and even tend to live longer than those who stay at senior care facilities.

The family and friends of seniors receiving at home care also get some benefits, such as peace of mind and a sense of control through such an arrangement. At home care also helps reduce the financial burden of having to pay for high nursing home or hospital bills during an illness or disability.

Modifying and Repairing Their Home

Modifying a senior's home may be necessary so that aging in place can be a viable option. This ensures that they maintain their independence while keeping them safe at all times. Home modifications should be made not only for the safety and security of seniors, but also to make it easier for them to do such simple activities as cooking, bathing, and climbing stairs.

Seniors are prone to falls and many home adaptations can be done to prevent such accidents. A specialist can be hired to conduct a home analysis and help identify areas of the home that need some repairs. Senior homeowners can then make some arrangements and budget their resources based on these needs. Those who are not yet in their senior years and wish to age in place and live independently for as long as possible should start early by making some simple changes in their homes.

One of the most common areas of concern is the tub and shower. A senior's home should have a shower entrance free from any type of barrier. If a senior's bathroom isn't safe enough for him, then he should consider renovating it. Items that are regularly used such as shampoo and bath soap should be well within reach as stretching too much can lead to falls. The tub and toilet areas must also have grab bars, because seniors often find it difficult to lower and raise themselves. High rise toilet aids can also help resolve this issue.
