Care For Mom and Dad

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 166

As a child, your parents gave their all to you. They were there for you financially, emotionally and involved in every way to support the apple of their eyes. Now the tables have turned, life changes and it's time for you to be the parent to them. This is a common scenario for many adults. The process of child becomes parent is inevitable at some point, but most never plan for this phase of their lives. It is sprung upon many adult children, and at this point they will have to choose between taking mom or dad in, sending them off to a nursing home, or hiring home health care.

The thing is, many times if you do decide to take your parents in, it can put a huge strain on your relationships with your spouse and children. Your already busy life will get even busier and sometimes you'll feel as though you're taking care of another child.

That rules out the first option. A nursing home may then seem idyllic for you, but it may seem like a sentence to imprisonment for your parents.

This is especially true if they are ill and cannot really help themselves. The attention is not one on one, and so they will just be another old person to take care of in the nursing home. Is that really what you want for someone who gave their all for you?

This leads us to the last option, which is to hire a home health care aide. These individuals will go to your parents house and give them the individualized care they need. Your parents will maintain some amount of independence and will feel more comfortable in a place they have known as home for decades.

On the other hand, you could always have them come to your home if they prefer, and still hire the help of a home health aide. This will prevent you from straining your relationships, working overtime to ensure all is taken care of, and also leaving enough time to take care of the rest of your family.

When it comes to caring for seniors, the choices are plenty, but there is one which seniors prefer most, which is to either stay with their families or remain in their own homes. A nursing home or hospital may seem too impersonal or clinical for their preference, and after all you will want your parent to stay close to home to spend as much time with them as possible.

Using a home health care aide will certainly relieve this pressure of either options and make both you and your parent feel happy with this new arrangement. A simple search online can provide hundreds of directory listings for home health aides.
