Making Your Ecommerce Web Site Attractive to Customers

Web site design is a vast and complex industry. It's both an art and a science. It's art insofar as it presents a visual representation to a viewer. It's a science in that there are defined parameters in terms of what works and what doesn't - we're always trying to learn the perfect formula to get the best look, feel and functionality for a site.

When it comes to e-commerce web sites, the online store designer faces a number of challenges. They have to achieve the ideal balance between look, feel and functionality - but they have to do so within a sales context. They have to treat a homepage like a shop front. Making an e-commerce web site look and feel good to the customer is the primary objective of online store designers.

There are a few basic considerations to keep in mind at all times when it comes to online store design. Firstly, navigating around the site must be logical and simple. Second, content must be placed to attract attention and make a clear call to action. Third, images and descriptions of products should be as unique and high-quality as possible.

In terms of layout, online stores share much with their offline counterparts. If a customer enters a shop and can easily find their way around, if the products are logically arranged, information clear and obvious and the checkout easy to find, there won't be any barriers to them buying. If the place is a mess, though, the chances are confusion will cloud the desire to make a purchase.

The same goes for online stores. The layout should make it impossible for the customer to get lost.

An online store's content has to communicate the business's unique selling point and the value of its products and services. Copy should be professionally written, informative and to-the-point. Readers should be able to quickly scan your page - especially your homepage - and identify a call to action. What is it they need to do? Contact you? Fill in a form? Buy now to claim a limited-time offer?

Pictures and descriptions of products ought to be clear and attention-grabbing. While load times need to be kept as short as possible, you never want to present customers with poor-quality images or generic product descriptions that don't offer anything the manufacturer (or competitors, for that matter) does not.

Look, feel and functionality. An online store should be easy to navigate, simple to understand and should offer a quality browsing experience that differentiates it from competitors.
