Ecommerce Web Design and Selling Products Online

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

When you sell goods from a physical store, the appearance and presentation of your premises is undeniably important to the impression you can expect to have on shoppers and browsers.

E commerce is no different. It's important to put your best foot forward in terms of style and presentation. Although it's a very different environment, the world of online shopping shares many of the laws of regular, brick-and-mortar retail.

In terms of e-commerce web design, it's all about making life as easy as possible for the customer and making the path to buying both clear and logical. Consider your site's navigation, for example.

When you walk into a grocery store, you rely on clear signage explaining how items are groups and in which areas you can find them. You know to follow a particular process: Pick up basket or trolley, select the items you require from the appropriate section of the store and go to the checkout for packing and payment.

An e-commerce site ought to offer a similarly logical and easy-to-understand layout. It must be clear to visitors what is on offer, where it is, how much it costs and what they need to do to buy it.

Having clear and logical navigation is all part of removing all possible obstacles that stand between your potential customers and the products or services you want them to buy.

The same goes for design, you wouldn't take a shop that sells expensive, high-fashion clothing seriously if they operated from a run-down warehouse in some obscure corner of some distant suburb.

Equally, you can't expect online shoppers to find your products and prices credible unless your e-commerce website's design, content and functionality reflects the values you're trying to communicate (and more importantly, your target audience's values).

So the way in which you present your products or services online can be just as important as the price point, really.

It's important to provide visitors with a design, layout and content that reflects their expectations of your business and its products. Your site's appearance and presentation can make the same difference as you'd find between a sole trader in a run-down suburban retail store and a mainstream fashion chain store on High St.

For these reasons, e-commerce web design is vitally important to an effective, successful online store. The visual and technical elements must both be of a quality that creates a positive impression on visitors and inspires them to do business with you.
