Off Grid Living With Hand Water Pumps

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 191

Water is a fundamental necessity of life. Households require water for many purposes including washing dishes and clothing, cooking, bathing, and drinking. Strategies for access to and collection of water are one concern among the various aspects of off grid living. Hand water pumps require no electricity and are well suited to off grid lifestyles and solar living.

These manual pumps are a practical method of transporting water for use. Off grid homes may source water from wells, streams, lakes, and cisterns used to collect rainwater. One of these devices can be installed to pull water from these sources to deliver for household use. Depending on the source, additional filtration and purification measures may be required. For use with water sources other than a well, consult with an experienced pump installer to ascertain the best steps to take for installation.

Installation is usually straightforward, and mechanically inclined adults will have little difficulty installing one within a couple of hours on their own. Although these devices provide ease of installation, it is always a sensible idea to have a professional handle the task. A licensed plumber, well driller, or professional pump installer should get the job done with minimal added expense.

Typically, hand water pumps are used with wells up to 350 feet in depth. Simple mechanical action brings water to the surface at approximately five gallons per minute. As well, they are designed so that the effort required for operation is often within the capability of small children. Certainly, most adults will find themselves capable of pumping with reasonable exertion. For long term use in off grid living, hand water pumps can be upgraded with solar options to save on elbow grease.

It's important that your pump be constructed out of durable materials that are safe for drinking water. Stainless steel is a good option. To prevent freezing, make sure to select a model with frost proof design to maintain a steady water supply throughout the year.

Installing hand water pumps requires a few key measurements. Before ordering it's important to determine the full depth a well is drilled or cased. The static depth or depth of the ground water is another required measurement. This is the distance from the top of the water in the well to the top of the well. Hand water pumps pump water from the level of the ground water, but the pump should be set at least twenty-five feet below static level to accommodate any decline.

Sound construction and basic elements of physics put mechanical and solar energy to good use as off grid homesteaders maintain water supplies with hand water pumps. In addition to use in off grid lifestyles, hand water pumps are great additions to homes with electric water pumps in case of power outages. These pumps have been used for generations and remain socially relevant as more people embrace environmentally responsible lifestyles.
