Some Tips Before Cooking With Kids

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 203

Some mothers think that cooking with kids is a horrible idea that may cause a lot of mess. It is a myth. Cooking with kids can be a successful experience. It is a great approach to have fun with family and to teach the children new, valuable skills as well. In general, kids like to help in the kitchen, so take the chance and get their help. All you need is to follow some tips to keep the young chefs safe enough. Read on to learn how kids can cook with you safely.

If it is the first time to accompany the kids with you in the kitchen, choose an easy-to-prepare recipe. You can find several recipes that are simple and fun for kids to cook at the same time. It is a brilliant idea to make your children determine the dish they would prefer. Of course, you can give them some suggestions to choose from.

List the ingredients and components in a piece of paper. You may need to pick up some cooking utensils that are safe for kids, so list those tools also in the same paper. Once you have written everything down, take the children with you to pick all the stuff from the store. It will be an added benefit and a learning experience for them. They will understand how to plan before hand and how to buy things. They will appreciate the effort that mothers exert to prepare foods.

Prepare the kitchen to welcome the young cooks. Make sure that you have a step-stool to allow the kids to reach the height of the counter. Having a step-stool is a necessary tool that permits children to wash vegetables and fruits easily.

The time of cooking is very sensitive. When children are not groggy or very active, they are more likely to learn new skills and talents. You can start the cooking experience with the kids after having the breakfast and doing some exercises.

Once you get into the kitchen start teaching them some general cooking rules such as rolling up the sleeves, covering the head, washing the hands, coughing or sneezing should be away from the food, and so on.

Younger children should be away from certain appliances and gadgets such as food processors, stoves and knives. However, you need to give them some instructions and warnings. You can tell them that Oven, stove and microwave may be very hot; therefore we should use mitt when using them. And it is very necessary to teach them that it is very dangerous to turn on any appliance while our hands are wet.

Spills and messes may cause real hazards, so give them enough explanation on how to remove and clean spills and unwanted things immediately.

Wrapping Up

Cooking with kids is a real fun experience. All you need is to prepare the kitchen to welcome the little cooks, choose a simple recipe, give the kids some rules and guidelines to follow, and be ready to receive any mess in a sense of humor.
