Selecting the Best Preschool for Your Child

April 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

Recently, while reading an article on education.com a researcher on the study of early childhood education emphasized the importance of picking the right preschool for your preschooler. The article went on to stress what is important in choosing a preschool in order to create a successful first grader.

We know that preschoolers learn in many ways. My experience with preschoolers has shown me providing small group and large group activities for preschoolers are equally important. I agree that giving the opportunity for preschoolers to choose what they want to do part of each day and including a circle time can be beneficial. This free time should include opportunities for dramatic play and gross and fine motor skills through crafts, puzzles and music along with fun activities like hopping, skipping, jumping and balancing.

Small groups sitting at a table provides an opportunity for taking turns and watching what peers are doing when creating artwork. This gives a quiet time to cut, paste and paint while having meaningful conversations with their teacher and classmates.

While entering into full class activities children are provided the opportunity to learn polite behavior when:

1) Standing in a single line and not cutting ahead 2) Listening to what others have to say and taking turns when talking 3) Following instructions as a member of a larger group 4) Challenges of relay races 5) Counting and letter recognition 6) Singing 7) Fingerplays

When considering a preschool inquire about typical daily activities. Following is an example of a good daily schedule for a preschool:

Free Play that provides dress up clothes, trucks, puzzles, dolls, learning stations and a quiet area to look at books.

Craft Time providing opportunities to practice cutting, coloring, drawing and pasting to encourage their creativity.

Snack Time teaches counting as napkins, cups and snacks are placed on tables for each child.

Large Motor Activities including marching, jumping and hopping while listening to music or using small instruments to keep rhythm while the music is playing.

Circle Time where children learn to listen quietly to a book being read, taking turns at the weather chart and calendar and learn fingerplays and songs as a group.

Preschoolers love repetition and learn quickly from repetition. Singing the songs and doing the fingerplays with your child while at home provides a sense of connection between school and home. By doing this your child will get the message that what they are learning at preschool is important to you.

My name is Brenda Grom and for the last twenty-five years I have been committed to early childhood development as a preschool teacher, owner and director. This has given me the opportunity to interact with hundreds of students and parents on a daily basis.

Most recently I was involved in starting, managing and overseeing all activities at a church preschool that was and continues to be be successful in preparing children for Kindergarten.
