Opiate Addiction: What You May Not Know About This Drug

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 183

Under any situation, the power or the danger of taking this powerful drug should never be underestimated. In the prescription form, this is only given to those patients that have already taken less potent opiates and have developed a tolerance. Anyone else that takes this drug is at risk for overdose because of the strength.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate that was introduced first in the late 1950's in Belgium. In the 1990's, the patch was introduced and that is when the addiction became more well known. Later, the lollipop was introduced and that made it even worse. The surge of abuse was clearly evident. It didn't take addicts long to discover that they could tamper with the patches to eliminate the time release if they cut up the patches and swallowed them or accessed the gel inside of the patch and injected, smoked, or snorted it.

On the Street

It is not surprising that fentanyl has quite an illicit drug value on the streets. On the streets this drug is called Tango and Cash, Apache, China white, Lollipop, Perc-O-Pop, and Murder 8. This is often used as a replacement drug for addicts that cannot get heroin. The result is very often overdosing because users take too much trying to get the same result as they do with heroin.

Fentanyl is very addictive and can be very damaging to the user. People that abuse this suffer from respiratory depression, liver damage, insomnia, night sweats, allergic reaction, severe constipation, and appetite loss. Like any other opiate when there is an absence of the drug in the body withdrawal occurs. Withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, achy muscles, diarrhea, increased heartbeat, fever, nasal discharge, sneezing, chills, hot flashes, excessive yawning, nausea, vomiting, nervousness, irritability, shivering, stomach cramps, insomnia, and weakness in the extremities.

Professional treatment is necessary for anyone that is stopping fentanyl. Initially a detox regimen is started by a professional medical staff. This process cleanses the user's body of the drugs while keeping them safe and comfortable. Tackling stopping this giant alone can be deadly and should never be considered. Once the detox process is complete the individual is then moved to inpatient treatment for the remainder of their stay in recovery.

Recovery from any drug is a lifelong process. Since this is an opiate and a very powerful one at that it decreases the brain's ability to produce dopamine. The problem with this is that the lack of dopamine makes the recovery process more difficult because it results in depression and a lack of energy. The brain will eventually recuperate but it does take time. People that are in recovery for any opiate abuse need to learn how to deal with this effectively.

Another problem with this particular addiction is that a lot of people do not have knowledge of fentanyl. If you suspect that a loved one may have a problem with it it is important to get help right away and to understand that help is available. Addicts are not always willing to accept that they have a problem and can refuse help initially. It only takes one person to step up and show that they care and it can make the world of difference in the life of someone with a drug problem.
