Help Your Child Take Drug Tests at School

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 209

Over the past few years, there is a growing tendency among school and college going students to resort to substance abuse. Many schools are aware of this and are conducting drug tests to identify drug abusing students. This is creating anxiety among students and many of them are developing fear to take these tests. As a responsible parent, it is your duty to help your children overcome their fears associated with drug testing.

There is a great concern among school authorities to reduce and prevent drug abuse among school students. After the US Supreme Court allowed this testing at schools in 2002, several schools have taken measures to administer these tests. Schools organize random drug testing rather than mandatory drug screen on all students.

Random tests are conducted at schools without any intimation. Students will be randomly picked up for the test. If the school authorities identify any symptoms of substance abuse in a student, they will pick that student for the test. Non-addicts need not fear because they would pass the test.

Many students get frightened the moment they hear about drug tests, even if they are non-addicts. Students feel embarrassed to take these tests. They assume that they will be branded as drug addicts (even if they don't use drugs) once they take the test.

Further, they fear that this infringes their personal liberty and that they would be harassed by their friends.

Your kids develop fear to drug testing at school because they feel that undergoing the test violates their integrity. Your kid may be afraid, encourage him to undergo the test. Explain him that it is neither going to harm him nor is going to hamper his academic tasks. You need to convey that it is great to pass the test.

If you have enough reasons to suspect your teen of taking drugs, encourage him to undergo the testing. If he fears that he may test positive, talk to him about the negative consequences of drug abuse, such as poor brain development, poor physical appearance, etc. Also explain him about the benefits of quitting the drug abuse - good career in future, healthy social and family relationships, less medical expenses, etc.

Positively reinforce your child with the need to take drug tests. Create a supporting family environment and explain to him that cooperating with the school management is a responsible act that leads to a happy and healthy future, irrespective of the test results. Even if tested positive, assure the kid of lending support and love to overcome the abuse as early as possible.
