Drinking Away Your Sorrows

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 186

What do you do if you are 'down in the dumps'? Crying may help for a limited time. Going for a run? Exercise is a great idea because it increases the discharge of happy brain chemicals. However often people resort to alcohol to help get a lift whenever they're feeling low. The truth is alcohol abuse is often a sign that the person is actually self-medicating for depression.

Just how does alcohol help to drown ones sorrows?

Put simply, alcohol activates the discharge of the happy brain chemical, identified as serotonin. Which means that while under the influence of booze, you will get a break from your stress or depression symptoms and you feel happier. However, this isn't a permanent answer because by the next day, the happy brain chemicals plummet to a record low. Actually the level is much lower than before the drinking spree even started the previous night!

You have a choice of two solutions

Bad Solution! The bad solution is to down one more drink! Another drink will sort out the actual serotonin levels to restore the level of happiness. Yet this particular happiness usually comes at a price. Without knowing it, booze just adds to the stress that you're experiencing. Excessive drinking alters the personality as we can so clearly see in any person that's drunk. This further aggravates relationships particularly in a family unit. Children that live in a home in which alcohol is abused often end up, as adults, struggling with a syndrome known as Adult Children of Alcoholics. A single person's stress has ripple effects. If excessive drinking is the way you cope with stress now could be the right time to take stock of your life and find a better solution.

Better Solution!

An even better remedy is to evaluate what is happening in your life and then figure out a healthier strategy for managing the stress you have. What is causing you stress? Alcohol is really a very bad form of self-medication which means you must find other ways of dealing with stress. All of us feel down in the dumps and stressed at times but if it continues for longer than 'normal' you could be suffering from depression. Stress triggers your 'happy brain chemicals' to get used up and in this way, stress is actually a direct source of depression. The most effective solution would be to learn about healthier ways of managing stress.

Let's face it, you really don't wish to be coping with the joint difficulty of depression and alcoholism!

Coping with stress

Believe it or not, stress is actually not caused by something that happens to us. Indeed, you did read that right! Stress is caused by how we see an event, the interpretation we give to something which has happened to us. Have you ever considered just how people respond in such different ways to the exact same situation? The big difference is with the interpretation that they connect to what's going on. Some of our thinking can contribute to making us vulnerable to stress and so to minimize stress it is much more important to consider changing the way you think.

Is it really possible to change the way we think?

We have all heard the old saying 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks'. This is just not true! We change our minds all the time. We are regularly changing our minds about things like what to do, what travel method to use, which garments to wear. I could make a really long list! The thing is that we're not aware of the many times we do change our minds as it is automatic. In a similar way, you almost certainly have set ways of coping with stress. With a bit of practice you can discover tips about how to change the way you think so you can be aware of the consequences of your way of thinking. It does need practice.

Resist alcohol as a way of handling stress. There are definitely far better solutions!
