Dangerous Effects of Alcohol Abuse

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 185

Alcohol is perhaps one of the most pervasive, dangerous drugs in the United States. In fact you can even say that alcohol is the single most destructive drug in the world yet it remains firmly entrenched in many countries and legal in most. How is this drug so dangerous when it seems so innocent? Packaged in brightly colored bottles with sleek advertising, alcohol companies market their products in bars, grocery stores and billboards driving down the freeway. Yet many people are blissfully unaware of the actual damage that it does to the body over time and the devastating effects it can leave mentally and physically.

Alcohol is a depressant that slows down the central nervous system in such a way as to induce dopamine release thus stimulating the appearance of feeling good. This, as people quickly find out though, is fast diminishing as the perceived good feelings part ways for physical slow down and lack of cognition. Furthermore there are lasting effects that work over time to degrade your central nervous system and internal organs. People typically assume that their hangover is the only symptom they see however a typical alcohol withdrawal can take up to two days to actually manifest. The usual effects of a hangover are easy to see with the headache or even vomiting the next day. What is less pronounced however is the latent effects including loss of memory, disorientation and other cognitive degradation which can last for a few weeks. Of course there are other far reaching physical effects which are not ever discussed in this article such as liver failure and intestinal issues.

In fact, alcohol is one of the only drugs you can actually die from as a result of withdrawal something you simply cannot experience with nicotine or even most other hard drugs. The recommendation for most people is that they start tapering their use before quitting cold turkey due to this potential issue even though many people do. It is surprising then how much alcohol is used and accepted in most Western countries. Addition to alcohol starts off slow but eventually takes a hold in emotional situations in your life. What begins as a fun way to blow off steam soon becomes a way to release the days stress and suddenly you can be drinking daily without even knowing it. Knowing the signs of alcohol addiction and the effect that it is having on your life is key to being able to treat the root causes.
