Learn the Common Forms of Domestic Abuse

April 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 200

When you think of domestic abuse, you probably think of one spouse beating the other up. But this is just one type of abuse that is sometimes seen among spouses. Sadly, sometimes this problem is difficult to spot if one person is not getting physically abused. This is why you should learn about the various types of domestic abuse.

Physical Abuse Between Spouses

Hitting, pushing, and choking are all some common methods of domestic abuse. Pulling the hair, biting, and scratching also all count as abuse toward one spouse. However, even blocking a person's way so he or she cannot leave is considered abuse. In addition, locking someone outside the house, refusing to give him or her necessary medication, and driving in a reckless manner can all be considered abuse.

In some cases, even when there is no physical harm done to a person, domestic abuse is still present. For example, if your spouse threatens to hurt you or use a weapon against you, that is physical abuse. The same goes for punching or kicking the walls of your home, or destroying your property. If your spouse has hurt your pets, relatives, or friends, you have been physically abused.

Emotional Abuse

In addition, threats are also considered emotional abuse since they are meant to control your actions. Even when your spouse frequently tells you that you are worthless and no one else would want you, this is considered emotional abuse. Of course, many spouses throw out hurtful comments like this at some point during arguments. But an abuser does it regularly, and does so to gain control over a spouse.

If your spouse makes frequent threats against you, frequently insults and criticizes you, or manipulates you, it is a good idea to contact a divorce lawyer so you can get out of this kind of destructive relationship.

Sexual Abuse

Many people think it is impossible to sexually abuse a spouse since you are expected to have sexual relations. But marriage does not give your spouse permission to be sexual with you when you have said no. Though forced sexual intercourse, or rape, is disturbingly common among spouses, it is not the only form of sexual abuse.

You may feel violated even if sexual intercourse does not occur. For example, if your spouse touches you inappropriately while you sleep, is unnecessarily rough, or rapes you with objects, you need to get help. Going to a divorce lawyer who has dealt with cases involving domestic abuse of all kinds is a good idea.

Financial Abuse

Considering that money is a common cause of divorce, it is no wonder that many people use it to try to control their spouse. For example, if your spouse is the breadwinner, he or she may constantly remind you of this fact. He or she may threaten to take away the money if you do not honor his or her demands. Some people also try to give their spouse a small allowance, and then deny requests to buy the necessities. If you feel your spouse is doing this to you, talk to a divorce lawyer.

In fact, if you are familiar with any of these tactics, you should consider hiring a divorce attorney. You need to get out the abusive relationship so you can work on healing from any wounds you have and improving your self-esteem.
