The Training Your Dog To Shake Hands Trick

June 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

The most direct way of communication between human beings and dogs is by the use of the shake hands trick. If you have kids at home and you want them to enjoy the company of your dog and have some fun, then teaching them this trick will work out for them.

Among the training methods that you need to be well versed with include clicker training. This method teaches your dog to comply with and repeat behaviors that will result in rewards. If you get hold of a clicker, you will see that it has got an easy to press button which makes a distinctive sound when you press it. If you are training your dog, you can make it click the button by correctly doing what you ask and if it manages, then you can reward it with a treat. This will make your dog realize that the associated click action results in a treat and so it will keep to it for future rewards.

As a formality to start the training, ensure your dog sits in front of you while you hold his paws for at least one second. Holding one of his paws, click the clicker then reward the dog with a treat. In case you do not have a clicker then you can just give the dog a treat as a result of him allowing you to hold his paw and stay with you. If your dog is responding well to the clicker, then repeat the action several times until the dog grasps what is going on.

After your dog has grasped the action, you can try making it put his paws in your hand without you assisting it by simply asking or touching his paw first. At this point when your dog lifts his paw use the clicker as a result, give him a treat. If by this time of the training your dog cannot place his paw actually in your hand, then you don't need to worry because the main point of achievement here is the movement of the paw and the rest will automatically follow.

Ensure you continue practicing with your dog until it reaches the point where your dog can freely offer his paws every time you place your hands out for him. If this is achieved, then you can advance the training by adding your cue word. You can use a word like "shake" which is universally used. Ensure you remain consistent on the cue word you choose and do not change from one cue word to another before your dog grasps what is happening.

If you can achieve this, then the training is progressing well. The next thing you need to do is lowering your hand to your dog so that he can place his paw in your hand. This will enable your dog to associate the cue word "shake" with the action he has been performing. In achieving this, you can go further by moving your hand up and down in a shaking motion and ensure the dog is following the motion. If your dog responds well to the moving hand and moves his paw in a similar manner, then give him a treat. This is basically what the click and treats philosophy entails and so for effectiveness in training your dog, you are required to keep to it.

Like any other training, once your dog has mastered the training, then you can systematically phase out the use of the clicker followed by the treats. In case you are not using the clicker, then all you need do is start eliminating the treats.

If your dog has fully conceptualized the actions with you, you can try having others do it with him. Ensure the people you invite follow the same procedure you have laid down and keep to your rules.Shaking his other paw.

In case your concentration has just been on one paw, you can try having your dog shake his other paw. Use the same training procedure with a clicker and treats as compliments for the training. This may take some time but if you are fully committed to training your dog, he will get the hang of it. You can also teach your dog right and left paw if your clearly want to get fancy and even further impress your friends and neighbors.
