Pros and Cons of a Pure Bred Dog

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

Looking for a dog? Yes, but which one? Maybe a pure breed?

This is what is going to be discussed in this article, What are the pros and cons of owning a pure bred dog.

Like I have said in earlier articles, owning a dog depends on many things, like-housing, exercise, playfulness and shedding. Also the money situation of the person.

There is more to taking care of dogs than just feeding and watering. As a dog owner you are responsible for the very life and well-being of the animal for the rest of their lives (and that can be a very long time). Right now I own two dogs and two cats. My oldest dog will be fifteen years old on July first of this year, my youngest will be five months old on the 22nd of April of this year. Both of my dogs at this time are mutts. One was born in my home fifteen years ago, the other was a gift from a friend of the family. They knew she would get well taken care of. Me personally, I do prefer Mutts.

Like I stated earlier they ALL have pros and cons. Let's start with the first thing we all look at, price.

Pure bred dogs can cost up into the thousands, yes thousands, keep this in mind when searching.

Remember not only is each breed different but each dog is different also. They will all have different temperaments, attitudes and personalities. After all they are individuals.

Another problem is certain dogs have certain health issues that will need to be addressed, so vet care is really important. Because they are interbred, it is easier for them to get diseases.

Though most breeders are extremely careful about this. A reputable breeder will have the dogs tested before breeding and they will have all these files on record. Even their ancestors results.

A responsible breeder may even prescreen homes for the pups to make sure the pup gets what the breed needs, not to mention the pup itself.

This might all seem to severe but responsible breeders care a great deal about where these pups go.

If you want a purebred dog you will need to go to the pet store or a breeder (preferably a reputable one). This has its advantages, you know things about your dog like background, parents and

exactly what diseases or health issues they may end up with so there is no guessing involved if a vet trip is needed.

A lot of purebred dogs are gotten so that they may enter competitions or "shows". They are seen many times as a higher class animal. I will state that a person should NOT use a dog as a social status symbol. If you do that then you have to ask, "Do you really care about the animal you have or just your status?".

Now you know some of the pros and cons of a pure bred dog. It really all comes down to what you want in your home and what you expect out of the dog. Following your heart is another good way

of choosing your dog, remember not all good dogs are pups. There are some really great older dogs also.

There are a lot of breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Here is a link to get a list of them: http://www.akc.org/breeds/complete_breed_list.cfm
