Taking On DIY Jobs

June 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 183

The modern DIY enthusiast has never had it so good: with a vast array of fantastic products and tools that help you to finish even the most demanding projects. From laser guided cutting equipment, to professional quality routers, saws and hand tools, there is a vast array of equipment and something for every job. But with the increased complexity of the work being undertaken comes an increased need for safety whilst working. This does not just include personal safety such as observing the most stringent safety checks and best practice working procedures, but consideration of issues such as fireproofing and structural integrity.

As we take on ever more complicated tasks that can affect the very fabric of our homes, it is vital to ensure that the products being used are suitable for the job. This is particularly the case with issues such as wiring, plumbing and timber supplies. Accidents, as we all know, can easily happen, but there is a wide difference between something that results from a momentary slip of concentration and a failure to properly undertake the necessary research. Many homes have been irreparably damaged and lives lost because the wrong types of materials are used.

The first rule, therefore, is not to attempt anything unless you have an extensive knowledge of what you are doing. The type of 'have-a-go' attitude that is acceptable when working on some patio decking or shelving is manifestly not acceptable when you are working on replacing roof supports, or plumbing in a sink. Making sure you have the correct materials is as important as knowing what you are doing and failure to obtain the correct strength timber supplies for roof supports, for example, is going to lead to major problems further down the line. If you feel able to handle the practicalities of the job, but just want some reassurance that you are using the correct materials, head to your local builders centre or trade merchants and speak to one of the advisers.

They will often have an extensive knowledge of their stock and the most suitable type of material for your project. Timber supplies, for example, come in a variety of grades and strengths and may also be fire proofed if they are going to be used as part of a fire break, such as in a wall. Checking on the building regulations will ensure you do not fall foul of local byelaws that prohibit the use of certain materials in particular situations and you would be well advised to contact your local building regulator if in doubt as to what is acceptable.
