Is Repairing Your Vacuum the Green Thing to Do?

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 200

Why would anyone repair a vacuum cleaner? For one thing, it might be more economical than buying a new vacuum. Seeing as some high-end vacuum brands can retail for hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars, replacing a brush roll for a $26.00 seems like a no brainer. However, repairing your vacuum is not only the cheaper alternative in most cases, it is also the more environmentally friendly!

Have you ever considered what happens to that old vacuum cleaner you toss in the dump? Sooner or later it will make its way to the local landfill, where it will probably rest for hundreds of year without degrading. Instead of throwing away the whole vacuum at the first sign of trouble, consider repairing or replacing parts that are likely the culprit and give your old vacuum a second chance at life! Here are few tips:

Empty your vacuum regularly: The most common reason that a vacuum is losing suction is because it's full. Make sure you are emptying your vacuum on a regular basis.

Check the belt: Vacuum cleaner belts are usually one of the more common components that needs replacing or repair. When the belt is worn or damaged, it doesn't pick up dirt as efficiently as it should.

Change the filter: Changing the vacuum filter on a regular basis ensures that air flow is not obstructed and the vacuum continues to perform efficiently.

Typically, many vacuum cleaner repairs are relatively simple and can be done by the do-it-yourself vacuum owner. Check your owner's manual for basic repair instructions.

However, changing out vacuum cleaner bags, throwing out old belts and changing the filter regularly can still lead to lots of waste that ends up in the landfill, even if the vacuum itself stays operational. If you want to get even more eco-friendly with your vacuum, choose vacuum cleaner that doesn't use bags in the first place! Canister vacuums don't rely on vacuum bags to collect dirt and dust, so there is no need to worry about creating more waste with discarded bags. You can empty the canister after every time you vacuum and your vacuum cleaner will stay more energy efficient and shouldn't lose suction overtime. If your vacuum model allows for it, you could also invest in a reusable filter as opposed to a paper filter, which just needs to be regularly cleaned out in order to stay functional. That way you are minimizing the amount of waste material your vacuum creates over time.

So not only is repairing your vacuum and replacing worn-out parts the more cost effective thing to do, it can also be the green thing to do! Even expensive, reusable filters can pay for themselves in time, provided you are properly maintaining them. Plus you get the added benefit of knowing you are doing your part to help the environment, even as you tidy up you own.
