What Is Whiplash?

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

Have you ever been in a car accident that has damaged your neck? Or have you at least known someone who has had such an experience? Have you noticed that after the incident, they may have had problems with their neck being in pain? This condition is referred to as a whiplash.

Whiplash is the condition in which your ligaments, discs, cervical muscles and joints between your vertebrae are damaged or injured. Often, this is associated with injuries related to automobile like crashes and collisions as it is in these incidents when there is high probability of sudden jerking of the head especially when your car is hit from the rear and your body is rocked back and forth.

While whiplash may not show its symptoms within the next hours or days after your car accident, you still look out for its manifestations. The most common symptoms include stiffness and pain in your neck area that seem to travel down to your shoulder blades and further to your lower back. The pain can also make moving your neck a bit difficult. You may also experience headache and dizziness as well as concentration and memory problems. In some cases, you are also likely to feel irritable, sleepy and extremely tired.

If you are already complaining about these symptoms, you might want to take the initiative of going to the hospital and having yourself tested through laboratory procedures like X-rays, CT scans and MRI. These are procedures that would show you the status of the internal structure of your neck and then point out possible damages within it.

You can actually prevent whiplash from happening. Car manufacturers have actually already taken up on this through the inclusion of headrests in the designs of their automobiles. So the only thing that matters is to choose the right type of headrest for you. But of course, it would also definitely help you avoid whiplash if you drive carefully enough to prevent possible collisions and accidents.

Good news though, whiplash is definitely treatable. In fact, there are first-aid guides wherein you are suggested to apply heat on the painful area or drink medicines like pain relievers such as ibuprofen. However, it is still better if you immediately consult a doctor or your chosen doctor of osteopathy to ensure that the injury has not damaged more important parts of your body like your nerves in your spine. If the spine is damage you will have more serious problem to deal with in the future.
