What Is the Diagnosis of Vein Pain in the Left Leg?

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

If you have pain in your leg, don't ignore it. It could be the sign of a potentially serious condition known as deep venous thrombosis, or DVT for short. This is a blood clot in the leg and it could form for a variety of reasons. Some form as a result of a long plane or car ride when the leg muscles are not used for an extended period of time. This is why many warn travelers not to stay seated for too long, and to flex their leg muscles periodically throughout their travels.

Those who experience pain in their leg should see their doctor. Diagnosis may vary depending on other factors beyond pain in the leg, so it is important not to assume that the pain is being caused by any particular condition or ailment. A doctor will evaluate your pain and other considerations in determining the appropriate diagnosis and, thus, the appropriate course of treatment.

A DVT may occur without symptoms, but for many the leg will be painful, swollen, and may become red or warm. Superficial veins in the leg may eventually become larger and engorged. The biggest concern, though, is that the blood clot will eventually break free and make its way into the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism which can be fatal.

Of course, pain may also be a result of varicose veins. These are large, bulging veins that appear most often in the legs. Many varicose veins are purple or blue in color, and can be the source of embarrassment or self-consciousness for some individuals who have them. They are the result of inefficiencies in the valves of veins, which are supposed to allow blood to flow back up towards the heart, and then close so that blood does not flow backwards. When the valves become inefficient, they may allow blood to flow backwards where it can pool in the veins. This is what causes the enlargement of the veins, and the bulging from the skin. Many with varicose veins note pain and discomfort in the legs as a result of the condition. Some note that their legs feel heavier.

So if you're experiencing pain in your legs, the best thing you can do is see a doctor. There are certain treatments and procedures available, many of which are minimally-invasive, that can treat these conditions so you can get past the pain and discomfort you're experiencing.
