What Is a Concussion?

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

It is quite scary to hear that you may have a concussion. Usually, the natural response would be to panic because usually doctors who announce such seem extremely serious. And yes, a concussion can be a serious condition if it is monitored and tracked carefully. Fortunately, with the right medical supervision and a number of precautions, concussion can be successfully treated, returning the patient to full health.

In the medical field, a concussion refers to the same cases as mild brain injury or traumatic injury in the head. Commonly, this is a condition that occurs along with sports injuries especially in athletes engaged in rigorous activities that risks your upper body from the neck up. What is alarming about concussion is that it also entails a problem with your brain function.

But by definition, concussion is a complex pathophysiological injury that affects your brain and its function following a trauma. It causes a temporary disturbance in your memory, judgment, speech and sense of balance and body coordination as well as your reflexes. This is because of the sudden shift or change in your brain due to a strong external impact brought about by injuries or accidents.

You should begin to suspect a concussion if you are experiencing a severe headache coupled with nausea and vomiting right after an accident or an injury in which you have banged your head to a solid surface. You may also experience confusion and perseverating, or the act of repeating a certain question countless of times even if you have already been answered previously. Another symptom you should watch out for is the short-term memory loss wherein you would have little to no recollection of the incidents before and during the accident. But probably the most apprehending of these symptoms is your loss of consciousness.

Maybe you have heard of some cases where what seems to be just a concussion has led to a state of comatose. But this does not get a bearing from sleeping after an injury to the head. You can actually sleep to calm yourself after the injury has distressed you. However, alert the people around you for possible problems in terms of awaking you as it may signal a more dangerous effect. Regardless though, it is better to take all the necessary precautions for you to avoid more serious conditions. You can undergo treatments with your trusted doctor of osteopathy and take the prescribed medications to get back to your healthy state.
