What Does A Diagnosis of Dyspraxia And Hyper Mobility Mean?

April 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 480

In this article I will discuss what it means to get a diagnosis of dyspraxia and hyper mobility. The reason I will do this is because many times children with dyspraxia often have hyper mobile joints and associated muscle weakness.

This article will cover

· What the diagnosis of dyspraxia and hyper mobility mean?

· What are the causes?

· What to do to best help your child?

Firstly, if you are told that your child has dyspraxia and hyper mobility, what this really means is that they have problems with their posture, movement and co-ordination but there is no specific medical reason why this is so. This is the dyspraxia component.

The joint mobility part comes about by the capsule and ligaments that hold the joints together being able to stretch more than they should, as do the muscles, meaning that the body parts are just held together loosely. As a result, muscles need to work harder just to get the body to move and respond to different stimuli. This can impact on balance and agility.

As stated above there is no actual medical condition why dyspraxia occurs. There are a few theories and the most popular one is that dyspraxia is caused by atypical brain development in which the parts of the brain need to communicate and control an action does not function correctly.

Genetics may also play a part in causing dyspraxia. The hyper mobility tends to occur almost as a consequence of the dyspraxia and children with this condition can have poor endurance as it is so much harder for them to complete a physical action.

The best way you can help your child suffering from dyspraxia and hyper mobility is via physical therapy or occupational therapy. Both forms of therapy differ in that a physical therapist works most on gross motor skills development, developing correct posture and helps a child with building up strength, flexibility, agility and endurance.

On the other hand an occupational therapist deals more with developing fine motor control such as what is needed for hand writing, other hand functions and typical daily activities.

There may be some overlap between both areas depending on what your child's specific needs and requirements are.

With proper intervention and therapy for dyspraxia and hyper mobility, your child will have better posture, co-ordination and movement. They will also have a much better quality of life and overcome many difficulties.
