What Causes Phlegm?

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 183

It is really uncomfortable when you have cough not just because of the hoarseness in your throat or the constant heaving from your chest but also due to the presence of phlegm. It is uncomfortable and it is definitely unhygienic. Phlegm distinguishes the magnitude or severity of your condition. Sometimes, and you may have heard this from most doctors, the presence of phlegm itself may already be an indication that your condition has deteriorated.

Phlegm is a liquid substance that is expelled from your mucous membranes. Essentially, phlegm is composed of water, immunoglobulins, lipids and glycoproteins. Your phlegm can come in different colors depending on the severity of your condition. Usually, it starts with a transparent look and progresses to yellow, green, brown and then eventually to grey.

Often, when you consult a doctor, the presence of phlegm in your respiratory tract is an indication that you are suffering from another host disease. As phlegm usually contains bacteria and inflamed cells, most medications serve to expel it.

There are different causes of phlegm secretion. One of them is smoking. It is actually a cause that can be avoided with a change in lifestyle. The smoke that comes from cigarettes can dry out your vocal chords, which leads to irritation and inflammation. The toxins that are also inside the cigarettes itself emit are very much detrimental to the nasal and air passages. Overuse of the vocal chords is also a common cause of phlegm. Even simple acts like clearing your throat, singing and yelling would cause the phlegm to loosen and the vocal chords to be inflamed.

Finally and probably the most common causes of phlegm secretion are infection-related illnesses like flu and bronchitis. When you are sick, your body and air passages attempt to release the bacteria through phlegm. Therefore, more phlegm is secreted so that it can wash away the bacteria off and expel it from your body.

Phlegm is actually one of those substances that your body secretes in an almost regular basis. It is just that more of it is secreted as a defense mechanism of your body. This is why you have to consult a doctor as soon as you have noticed that there is too much presence of the phlegm to be sure that you eliminate the bacteria that may be causing it and to eventually treat the disease or illness from which it originates.
