Various Symptoms of a Fatty Liver

May 31, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 206

Learning to recognize the symptoms of a fatty liver is important as this is typically the way to diagnose alcoholic or non-alcoholic liver disease. Fat that shows up on much of the body is tough to ignore. You cannot really shut your eyes to belly and leg fat, but liver fat is completely different. You do not feel or see your liver, so liver fat is often not noticed. All livers do contain some fat, but once the fat reaches more than 10 percent, there is often a problem with the liver.

Causes of the symptoms of FLD

Fatty liver disease (FLD) is present in a number of people. The primary cause of the symptoms and disease is definitely the overuse or abuse of alcohol, something that happens with over 15 million Americans. Over 90 percent of alcohol abusers develop fatty livers. This disease, a subset of this disease, known as Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD), might occur after drinking moderate or large amounts of alcohol over a long period of time. It might also occur after a short session of binge drinking and is referred to as acute ALD. Nonalcoholic FLD (NAFLD) is the other subset of the disease. Some people simply have excess fat for no particular reason, but this is not a problem unless the fat starts to cause damage or inflammation. Some may also experience nonalcoholic steatohepatisis (NASH), a disease similar to ALD but not caused by alcohol consumption.

Detailed fatty liver symptoms

Fatty liver disease, no matter the cause, is typically a silent disease. The disease often produces no symptoms and can take many years or even decades to advance to the point where it causes symptoms. If your disease has progressed far enough to cause symptoms, initial symptoms include nausea, weight loss, weakness, fatigue, confusion, trouble concentrating, appetite loss and impaired judgement. As the disease advances, symptoms such as skin discoloration, abdominal pain and liver enlargement may present themselves. If the disease is caused by alcohol, symptoms from cirrhosis often present themselves. These symptoms include internal bleeding, fluid retention, jaundice, muscle wasting and eventually liver failure.

Fatty liver disease is, as noted, hard to recognize as symptoms often take decades to present themselves. If you experience symptoms of a fatty liver, make an appointment with your doctor for a blood test or other diagnosis method. This diagnosis allows the doctor to start the appropriate treatment regiment, preventing further disease and destruction. is one of the leading sites on the web for information on the symptoms of various types of liver diseases and conditions.
