The Sound of Whooping Cough

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

Whooping cough, also known as Pertussis, is a very dangerous disease that effects millions of small children and older adults every year. If not properly treated it can cause permanent disability or even death. Most deaths related to whooping cough are small children that aren't treated in time. Some of the symptoms you should look for are uncontrollable coughing, sore throat, and trouble breathing. If you notice any of these symptoms in your child you should take them to a doctor to make sure they don't have this disease.

The name was given because when someone has this illness they suffer from a loud hacking cough and when they inhale it is a high pitched "whoop" sound. There is an immunization available now for this illness and most newborn babies are issued the vaccine at a young age. If your child has not been vaccinated you should be on high alert. Pertussis is a very contagious disease. It is spread through airborne pathogens so if your child is around a lot of other kids make sure they aren't coughing or showing symptoms listed above. It is always better safe than sorry so get your child checked out if they haven't been vaccinated and are showing signs of whooping cough.

Most kid's today are vaccinated and whooping cough cases have been reported in a lot of older people. These cases are a lot more mild, but they can still be very contagious. The disease can be treated so if you think you might have this illness go to a doctor before you spread it to other people. It is very easy to test for this now. It can last for up to six weeks so it is in your best interest to get treated.

Adults and teenagers that suffer from this disease usually recover very easily and don't suffer long term. It is only small children that you have to be worried about. Since they are small and their immune systems haven't been built up yet they are very susceptible to this disease. It is important to have them immunized or make sure to keep them healthy and away from other small children that are sick. There are several different herbal methods and all-natural remedies to help prevent and sometimes even cure whooping cough. You can research these on several different medical sites, just make sure to consult with a doctor as well. Without proper care a baby can suffer very serious consequences if they have it and aren't treated.

Pertussis is a very dangerous illness. If you think your child might have whooping cough you should take them to the doctor immediately for a full evaluation.
