May 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 160

When we were younger we remember watching Muhammed Ali "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee." We remember Michael J. Fox as the cool Marty McFly traveling back to the future. And when we see these two celebrities who suffer from Parkinson's disease, it makes us wonder could that happen to us? Although neurologists can't determine the exact cause of this disease, it's important to be aware of its signs and symptoms.

First it is important to understand what Parkinson's disease is so you can understand the way it manifests. Parkinson's is a neurological condition that affects the nerve cells in the brain. There are certain cells in the brain that create a chemical called dopamine. When nerve cells stop producing dopamine, the brain cannot send signals correctly throughout the body, which causes the loss of muscle function.

Parkinson's disease symptoms vary from person to person. Early signs usually go unnoticed. Symptoms usually start on one side of the body and then spread to the other side. The exponentially get worse as time goes on.

One of the first warning signs of this disease is called Tremor or shaking. Although it is normal to shake after exercise or after suffering an injury, if you find yourself twitching or shaking during relaxing times this can be an early sign of Parkinson's disease.

Another early sign of Parkinson's is a change in your handwriting. The letters might become smaller and the words are more crowded together. Although handwriting does change as you get older it's important to learn the reason why. The change in hand writing might be due to arthritis or poor vision and not because of Parkinson's.

Another common sign of Parkinson's is losing your sense of smell. If you are suffering from a cold and you are congested then you might not be able to smell. But if you are feeling perfectly healthy and you can't smell foods like licorice or bananas you should consult your doctor.

Stiff muscles are the most common sign of Parkinson's. There are lots of reasons why you would be experiencing stiff muscles such as rigorous exercise or arthritis. A good way to know if your stiff muscles are from Parkinson's disease is to take note of your arms as you walk. If you are arms are not swinging while you move this could be an indicator that you might be suffering from Parkinson's disease. Also observe your posture. If you are beginning to slouch that might also be a sign.

If you notice that you are suffering from any of the signs and symptoms Parkinson's then you should go see a neurologist immediately to find out the cause.

If you notice that you are suffering from any of the signs and symptoms Parkinson's disease then you should go see Dr. Victor Chehebar MD. Victor Chehebar MD is a board certified neurologist. He can give you an in-depth evaluation and provide you with the proper treatment for Parkinson's disease.
