Kidney Infection Signs and Symptoms

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

It is not that hard to identify kidney infection signs and symptoms since most of these symptoms are felt in the urinary tract, the main components of which are the kidney, bladder, urethra, and ureters. Also often referred to as upper urinary tract infection or pyelonephritis, kidney infection can become potentially serious and cause severe illness if it's not cured immediately. Luckily, antibiotics treatment is very effective against pyelonephritis. If the kidney infection is serious, it has the chance of spreading to the blood so the earlier it's treated, the better.

The kidneys play very important roles in the body. The most critical of these functions is their job of filtering waste products off the blood as it circulates within the kidneys. Additionally, the kidneys regulate blood pressure, contribute to the creation of red blood cells, and maintain stable levels of electrolytes in the body like calcium, sodium, chloride, phosphorus, and potassium. If these functions are compromised, a person can become severely ill. That said, you should always take good care and make it a point to see a doctor whenever you feel that something is amiss.

Here are the most common kidney infection signs and symptoms:

1. Fever. 2. Pain in the abdominal area. 3. A strong and persistent urge to go and urinate. 4. When you urinate, there's pus or blood in your urine. This is referred to as hematuria. 5. Pain in the back, groin, or side flank. 6. You keep on frequently urinating. 7. Nausea. 8. Vomiting. 9. Chills. 10. General malaise. 11. You feel pain or a burning sensation when you urinate.

Whenever you notice any of the symptoms above, it is highly recommended that you immediately see a doctor. Also, always make an appointment with your physician if you see that the symptoms and signs aren't improving even though you are taking treatments for them. Untreated kidney infection can lead to more severe complications that can be life-threatening. It is especially advisable that you seek medical attention if along with the common kidney infection symptoms, you also feel vomiting, nausea, or there's blood in your urine.

Kidney are caused by bacteria that gain entry into the urinary system. The most common of these bacteria are Escherichia coli or E. coli. This bacteria accounts for nearly 80% of all cases of urinary tract and kidney infections. Other bacteria that may cause urinary tract infection include Proteus, Enterococcus, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, and Staphylococcus Saprophyticus. These bacteria can gain entry to the urinary system through the urethra, the rectum, the vagina, or even through the skin. Women are more susceptible to infections than men because the length of their urethra is much shorter.

There are also factors that may increase the risks of getting a kidney or urinary tract infection. Sexual intercourse as well as pregnancy can increase the risk in women. Bacteria can also travel through urinary catheters. Last but not the least, kidney stones and other abnormalities in the urinary system also increase the chances of kidney infection.

So whenever you notice the kidney infection signs and symptoms mentioned above, you should immediately consult your doctor.
