Epstein Barr Virus Related Disease - Mononucleosis

Epstein barr virus also known as EBV is a group of the herpes virus family. Epstein Barr virus is the most common virus to cause infection in human. The virus is the main cause of mononucleosis, a worldwide infectious disease affecting children and adult. According to recent statistics, there are around 95% of adults between 35 and 40 years of age have been infected with Epstein Barr Virus. Epstein Barr virus known to associate with some type of cancer, particularly Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and central nervous system lymphomas associated with HIV.

About Mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis disease occurs in about half of all children below age of five years old. Commonly the symptoms of mono in children may appear with the range from mild or asymptomatic. Most common mononucleosis symptom in children is fever. Fever is a normal physiology reaction of body to kill infection and may increase risk of febrile convulsions or seizure if temperature rises too high. To reduce or lower the temperature in the children you can sponge the body with luke warm water, paying attention to under the armpits and groin where blood runs close to the surface.

Those with age of 15 to 17 are at high risk and commonly infected with Epstein Bar Virus. Most common symptoms of mono in adult include the soreness of throat. If the above symptoms are not appeared within the period of two days then the Infectious mononucleosis is not be present in a person's body. The time between being exposed to the virus and to develop symptoms is 30 to 50 days.

How to Prevent Epstein Barr virus and Mono Disease?

EBV mode of transmission mainly occur through saliva.This can be done when someone kissing others or share utensils such as spoon or glass. In order to avoid the virus being transmitted, you should avoid kissing or sharing utensils with someone has mononucleosis infection. You should make sure to wash the utensils used by people with infected mononucleosis and do not share food with them. Although mononucleosis contagious period is varied but most cases of mononucleosis may be contagious while they have symptoms and may up to a few months afterwards.

The facts that Epstein Barr virus (or EBV) is one of the most common infectious diseases in the world should be accepted. The symptoms of mono are not fully discussed here since there are many other symptoms of mononucleosis to consider by your physicians to confirm mononucleosis diagnosis. You should know about your body change and risk factor of Epstein Barr virus infection to choose the best treatment. Misdiagnosis is the main contributor of failure in mono treatment.
