Do You Have a Simple Virus Infection or Pleurisy?

February 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 167

The Pleura is a two layered sac that is responsible for holding the lungs and separating them from the chest wall, diaphragm as well as the heart. The inflammation of this pleura result to the chronic disease termed as pleurisy. Inflammation of the pleurae causes breathing to become painful and it also leads to the accumulation of a fluid in the pleural sac.

Pleurisy can be apportioned in two categories: dry pleurisy and wet pleurisy. Dry pleurisy is the most common condition, in which the inflamed pleurae rub against each other directly, while in wet pleurisy fluid discharges from the inflamed tissue inside the chest wall and the lungs. Viral infections are the major cause of pleurisy. However, there are other causes too, which are:

• Pleurisy can also occur to those people who have a complication of any sort of underlying lung diseases. This could be pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung abscesses or influenza • Inflammatory bowel disease • People who have undergone a heart surgery • People suffering from high blood pressure are also prone to Pleurisy • It could be to some unnoticed chest injury • Blood clot in the lungs • Trauma from bruised or broken ribs• In some cases the cause idiopathic i.e. they cannot be identified

There could be few more causes of this disease; therefore it is essential to know about the symptoms that will help you in finding out if ones suffering from this disease or not. The common symptoms include; difficulty in breathing, you may also suffer from fever as pleurisy is associated with viral infections, you might also suffer from severe pain in the chest, shoulders and back, there could be unexplained weight loss, coughing and sore throat and in severe cases you might also vomit blood.

But all these symptoms might not be enough to determine if your suffering from pleurisy or not, so you need to visit your doctor soon, and undergo a serious of diagnostic tests which includes; Chest X-ray which shows how the heart and lungs look, CT Scan which shows signs of pneumonia or tumor, Ultrasound, Blood tests, Biopsy which is conducted if cancer is detected, Arterial blood gas to check how well the lungs are taking in oxygen and Magnetic resonance imaging i.e. MRI which shows pleural effusions and tumors.

The smallest of illness could be pleurisy symptoms, so do not ignore it, and consult your doctor at the earliest.
