3 Things You Should Know About Bloodborne Diseases

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 178

Diseases caused due to Bloodborne pathogens have become very common these days. These are caused mainly due to the poor standards of hygiene maintained in blood banks, careless handling of medical apparatus by the health care professionals and terrible negligence on our part. There are many ways in which bloodborne pathogens can transferred from one individual to another. However, with some basic precautions and care you can definitely avoid these diseases.

The major diseases caused by the blood borne pathogens are the hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) causes by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and viral hemorrhagic fever.

The above diseases are passed on due to infected needles, unprotected sexual intercourse and mother to child transfer of infection during pregnancy. At times one is unaware of the transfer but more often than not you can find yourself at blame for the unnecessary spread.

The disease can spread by direct contact, for instance if the contaminated blood comes in contact with an open wound or lesion, or by indirect contact, that is if infected needles are used by healthy persons to inject themselves with drugs.

One common characteristic of the bloodborne pathogens is that it takes a lot of time for the disease to manifest its symptoms in individuals. The symptoms are prominent only when the disease has reached a very late stage of its infection, this is when it gets difficult to treat the infection. A lot of these diseases prove fatal or highly damaging which can leave a person with impaired abilities or on life support.

You are at a greater risk of getting infected by a bloodborne disease if:

• You work as a health care professional. Casualness or improper handling of blood samples or surgical instruments by the health care workers can either lead to you getting infected or the patients getting infected by your contaminated blood. Hence use of gloves is a foremost requirement

• You work as a sex worker. A sex worker is at a risk of procuring or spreading the bloodborne pathogens due to unprotected sex

• You are a heavy intravenous drug abuser. An intravenous drug abuser falls prey to the diseases due to repeated usage of infected needles which are shared by many fellow drug abusers.

You definitely need to maintain proper hygiene standards in order to protect yourself and others from the bloodborne diseases. Blood banks sometimes become a major source of spread of these diseases due to lapse in safety procedures. The blood banks need to make use of the available blood decontaminating procedures like treating the blood from time to time with UV rays along with Riboflavins which alter the nucleic acids of the pathogens which render them useless, synthetic Psoralen and Amotosalen HCl to prevent the spread of diseases due to the pathogens.

To prevent unnecessary damage caused due to bloodborne diseases you should follow the safety guidelines without fail as even a small mistake, as small as even a needle prick, can lead to unfortunate consequences.
