Warts - Not Just For Witches

June 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 171

No fashionable witch ever goes without a wart, but it's a look not everyone can pull off nor do many want to. However, the number of people with warts is growing... and they are not all witches.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 20 million Americans have HPV, the virus responsible for genital warts. The CDC also predicts that six million new cases of HPV occur each year, and half of all sexually active adults will have HPV at some point in their lives.

More than forty types of HPV affect both males and females and cause infections of the genitals, mouth, and throat. Most people infected with HPV do not exhibit symptoms and as such do not know they have HPV. In 90% of the cases, HPV will naturally clear a person's system within two years. However, until HPV clears, it can be passed from one sex partner to another. Those who do not clear the infection can develop genital warts.

Genital warts emerge within weeks or months of being infected. They appear as a bump or a group of bumps on the genitals and oftentimes resemble cauliflower. A doctor can diagnose genital warts by sight. There is no test for HPV. Neither is there a treatment for the virus. However, treatments for the diseases caused by the virus do exist.

The most common problems caused by HPV are genital warts and cervical cancer. Genital warts can be removed with medication either by the patient or a health care provider. Cervical cancer is typically diagnosed by a Pap smear with the best prognosis if diagnosed and treated early.

The only way to prevent HPV is to avoid all sexual contact. However, there are several ways to reduce your chances of contracting the virus. One method is to use latex condoms each time you have sex. While condoms help, they are not 100% effective. Limiting the number of sexual partners also improves your chances of remaining HPV free. Another option is an HPV vaccine.

Two vaccines (Gardasil and Cervarix) have been developed for the most common forms of the HPV virus and are available to both males and females. Either vaccine is most effective if administered between the ages of eleven and twelve, and for proper inoculation, three shots are required.

There are many ways to get an STD, and if you get one, find a location for STD Testing in Los Angeles.
