Lessons From Life in the Fast Lane

June 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

Who knew The Eagles rock band could teach future generations a thing or two about the risks involved with using drugs and making bad decisions? The hit single "Life in the Fast Lane," tells a story about a "hard-headed" man and a "terminally pretty" girl who were both "good in bed." Together they threw expensive parties with "lines on the mirror" and "lines on her face." The final verse describes how their lifestyle finally caught up with them, that they were "dyin' to get off that freeway." Released in 1976, the song still resonates with a powerful message.

Unfortunately, there are still single men and women today having causal unprotected sex and using illegal drugs like cocaine. Put together, these two habits can have deadly consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) persons engaging in unprotected sex who also use illegal drugs are more likely to contract and spread STDs than those who don't. This is why it's essential to discuss your partners' sexual history and any drug use. But the trouble is, how do you know they're telling the truth, especially when you've only met your partner for the first time that night? The truth is, it's impossible to know if they're telling the truth or not.

Without STD test results you and your partners' STD status is unknown. And the scary thing is, you or your partner may already be infected with an STD and not even know it because many STDs are asymptomatic, meaning they show no signs or symptoms. So while you may think you're STD free and feeling just fine, the untreated STD is wreaking havoc on your sexual organs and immune system. If left untreated, STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause infertility, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) can cause anal and cervical cancers and advanced syphilis can cause damage to the heart, brain and other organs. A person infected with genital herpes had the virus for the rest of his or her life, unable to predict when they will experience the next outbreak and unable to guarantee their partners they won't get infected. Contracting the HIV/AIDS virus is fatal with modern medicine only able to treat its symptoms.

Life in the fast lane isn't all it's cracked up to be which makes prevention your best defense. Aside from abstinence, condoms are the best protection against the spread of STDs. Condoms should hug the penis to prevent slippage during sexual intercourse. Avoid using oil based lubricants like petroleum jelly and lotions which deteriorate latex, rendering a condom useless. In addition to condoms, anonymous STD testing is an essential part of protecting your sexual health.

Tragically, many single men and women are reluctant to get anonymous STD testing because they don't have a primary physician, they don't have health insurance, they are afraid of an embarrassing doctor's office visit and they don't want their STD test results submitted to their health insurance company. With anonymous STD testing, STD tests are conducted in a lab so singles can avoid an embarrassing doctor's office visit. Paying with a pre-paid credit card ensures that your STD test results will not be submitted to your health insurance company and only shared with you.

When it comes to your sexual health, knowledge is power. With anonymous STD testing you know your true STD status so you can get the treatment you need and further prevent the spread of STDs. Waiting is dangerous. Get tested.

There are many ways to get an STD, and if you get one, find a location for STD Testing in Washington.
