Gential Warts: Preventing, Diagnosing, and Treating

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 156

Genital warts are also called venereal warts or condylomata acuminate, are one of the most common kinds of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Over 6 million new cases are diagnosed each year. They are flat, fibrous overgrowths caused by the human paillomavirus, or HPV. The HPV virus has over 100 strains, but only a few of those can cause warts. Malignancy is rare, though there have been cancerous warts related to particular strains of the virus.

Usually genital warts have no symptoms, but sometimes can be painful or itchy. Diagnosis of the problem is made by simple visual inspection and, in some circumstances, a biopsy. Biopsies are needed if the diagnosis is unconfirmed, there is no response to treatment, the warts appear to be bleeding, unmovable or ulcerated, or if the patient has compromised immunity. If one partner tests positive, the other partner should be screened. It is also important to note that once infected with the virus, warts do not always appear right away.

There are a variety of options for the treatment of this problem. The method of treatment should be agreed upon collaboratively with both patient and physician. Treatment is usually based on controlling the symptoms and cosmetic concerns. Oral medications, freezing, topical ointments, and even surgery are all methods of treatment that can be effective. There is no cure for genital warts, as once the HPV virus enters the body there is no cure. The virus can become dormant, but the body will always be infected with it. Illness and stress can cause the virus to be re-activated and symptoms to re-occur.

In recent years, a campaign for preventing this issue and HPV has begun. Gardasil is a newer vaccine developed for females ages 9-26. It helps protect against 4 types of HPV. Gardasil is given in three injections over a 6 month period. This vaccine also helps in preventing cervical cancer, and genital warts in both females and males. However, Gardasil does not protect against all forms of cervical cancer so yearly exams and pap testing continue to be important for most women. It's also important to note that Gardasil is not a treatment for warts, cervical cancer, or a birth control option.

Limiting sexual partners, and being screened for STDs, including genital warts, can both help to maintain sexual health. The Garadasil vaccine can also help protect against HPV, and therefore against cervical cancer and this problem. Even though genital warts and HPV are quite prevalent among sexually active males and females today, there are methods of prevention and treatment. Patients with questions or concerns should contact their physician.
