What Are Genital Warts?

Sometimes there is a lot of confusion on what warts exactly are. They are in a way, the same as every other wart found on the body. They are the same fleshy lumps found on your hands and feet that are sometimes known as: plantar warts, juvenile warts, butcher's warts, and common hand warts. The difference is, genital warts show up only in the genital region or near the genital region (such as the anus) and can not be spread to other parts of the body except the mouth, which only occurs in very rare instances. So this means you don't have to worry about spreading genital warts to your hands, feet, or other parts of your body. However, they are also a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease.

Now they can appear as little bumps or skin growth in the genital region. There can be just a single wart, or there can be many bunched together. They are usually flat or raised with a flesh or whitish color which are not always easily seen by our eyes. There are many people who do not even realize they have warts since they can be so difficult to spot. Men and women are equally at risk of developing warts when engaging in intercourse. Even having intercourse with a condom does not guarantee safety from warts, which will be explained in the section, What Causes Warts.

They are also called HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). It is the number one STD contracted among sexual active individuals in the world. Although mostly harmless, we have found that there are over 100 different types of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). However, out of the 100 different types of HPV, only about 30 types of HPV actually cause genital warts. The most common types of HPV that cause warts are HPV strains 6 and 11. These two strains account for over 90% of all cases of HPV that cause warts. Now warts, or HPV, is a viral infection of the skin. It is sometimes known as Venereal Warts, Condylomata Acuminata, and Anogenital Warts. When infected, individuals will experience growths of cauliflower likes masses, which are usually skin colored all around their genital region in different shapes and sizes.

Many doctors believe there are more cases of HPV than any other STD in the United States, Up to 5 million new cases are reported each year which infect anywhere from 3-28% of our population. The good news though, is that warts are not fatal and aren't even physically harmful to you at all. They are not the HPV strain responsible for cervical and penile cancer. They are merely an eye sore that can be treated relatively easy.

What Causes Genital Warts?

Warts are caused by HPV (human papilloma virus), which causes all forms of warts, whether they are genital or not. There are many different strains of HPV, however only a few types cause Genital Warts. HPV types 6 and 11 are the ones responsible for the majority of Wart cases. HPV types 6 and 11 infect the top layer of our skin, so any skin to skin contact with someone puts them at risk of developing the condition themselves. This is how the virus is contracted most of the time. During intercourse, we cause extremely small abrasions in the skin of our genital region. The virus makes its way into these abrasions and infects the cells in your skin. This is why wearing a condom is not always effective at preventing the spread of genital warts, as you still have skin to skin contact on the rest of your genital region not covered by a condom. Once the virus infects the cells, it can lay dormant for days to years without you ever showing a sign that you have genital warts. The majority of people however, will typically show sings of genital warts within 3-6 months.
