Living With A Disability In Today's Modern World

May 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

These days however, many nations have social programs and much more enlightened attitudes that help those living with a disability live a full and valuable life. These social programs, while helping disabled people avoid poverty, are not something that most disabled people would be happy with as their lot in life. Whilst they can help a great deal, most people do not want to live on handouts, and want to contribute to the workforce.

There is also some stigma attached to those claiming disability benefits, due to some unscrupulous people abusing the system. For these reasons, people want to earn their way in the world, but getting work as a disabled person is not always easy.

Finding work

There is little a disabled person cannot do that a fully able person can do given the right support. Employers are also much more enlightened these days when it comes to employing the disabled. Having said that, there still many employers are still scared to offer employment. Much of this fear comes with the common perception of disabled people as people who may be easily offended. This is probably not helped by the common stereotype such as someone in a wheelchair on TV, who is angry as soon as someone says the wrong thing or tries to lend a helping hand.

In real life, most disabled people have had a long time to come to terms with their disability. Many have grown up with this disadvantage and learned how to function in the world, so do not react the person on TV that was described earlier.. Disabled people are not angry wheelchair activists who bite the head off anyone who says a word out of place. Just normal people.

Maintaining relationships with people

This can be one of the hardest aspects of being disabled. It is made difficult not because of the disability itself, but because it can sometimes be hard to get out and meet people.

Many of the places where people meet and have fun, can sometimes feel as if they do not cater for the disabled. Although this is changing all the time, it can still be a little difficult at times to go out to a club or a bar for a few drinks. If you need a carer to function, it can also be a little scary for people. So disabled people often have to be more creative in the way they go about making friends and forming relationships.

It's a good idea to take up a hobby, not only because this gets you out of your everyday environment, but it's also a fantastic chance to meet new people. If you are able to work, finding a job will also help you in this regard. Getting to know your work colleges can open up a new circle of friends to you.

So to sum it up

There is no reason in today's world why anyone with any type of disability should be excluded from any aspect of life. All it takes is a willingness to get out there and live you life to the full. If you have been disabled since birth, or you have become disabled, you will already have a good idea of how to live your life. But by thinking about ways in which you can get more out of it, you will increase you chances of not letting your disability get in the way of living fully.

Whilst much of the world could improve the way in which it treats disabled people, in comparison to recent history, or indeed any history, there has never been a better time for disabled people to live as full a life as possible. Attitudes are also changing for the better, but there's still much room for improvement.
