How to Overcome Learning Disabilities

May 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

In this article I am going to discuss how to overcome learning disabilities. The reason I chose this topic on learning disabilities is because when one first thinks in terms of disability, it is easy to believe that the person with the disability will always be the underdog and all not go on to lead a fulfilled life.

However this is untrue. Having a learning disability just makes life a bit more complicated as the person with the disability must work harder as must his or her family and support system to make sure they "catch up" with their peers to the best of their ability.

It is not like having a terminal disease and with so many advances and breakthroughs, thankfully the days of locking up or hiding someone with a disability are long gone.

This article addresses learning disabilities and how to overcome them.

  1. The first thing to do is learn everything there is to learn about the diagnosis.
  2. Be willing to try new things to see where there were measurable improvements in the sufferers life.
  3. Always encourage the sufferer to step outside their comfort zone and set measurable targets for themselves which are achievable by pushing them a little. When these small goals are accomplished, help them reach for more difficult ones. However please note do not push the person with the disability to do something that will have little positive impact on their life or which will cause them undue distress. Otherwise what they gain in one area will be taken from another.
  4. Encourage them to take part in activities that will challenge them but include some fun ones also. Every experience should be one that will enrich their lives and teach them something worthwhile.
  5. Parents and other support services need to approach the person who is trying to holistically overcome learning disabilities. There is no one size fits all when it comes to the life lived by any person. A person with learning disabilities is no different.
  6. Where things go wrong do not always step in to fix the problem. Allow the person with the disability time to try to resolve any issues. Only step in if asked (and then use your discretion as to the amount of help to offer), or step in if the sufferer is becoming upset or agitated or if things are getting out of control.
  7. After the situation has diffused, take some time out to discuss what happened with the person with learning disabilities and encourage them to think what they should have done instead to solve the problem themselves.
