Being 'Old' Doesn't Mean Being Irrelevant to Society

May 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 107

Often, because an individual has had the good fortune to live a full and long life and had their share of both good and bad life experiences, they are considered to be among the aged. However, this does not mean that it is now acceptable to dismiss such a person as being 'just another senior' or 'another one of the elderly'. It often seems that the general attitude towards seniors is that their needs for freedom of access and mobility within their community are less paramount, especially if one has relocated to a senior care facility. However, maintaining one's independence is a consideration that arguable takes on even more importance once one has begun to enter their "golden years".

Nobody has ever convincingly argued that there are any laws, rules or statutes that judge seniors as having any less desire or need to stay in touch with the rest of their community any less than the rest of us; to think otherwise is to do a great disservice to a large and ever-growing segment of any community. Seniors in my community are still an integral and vibrant part of it and I am sure that it is the same in yours. Of course, in later years people start to face greater challenges in their personal mobility and may find that their own lack of mobility is a barrier to accessing the local world around them.

One potential answer for many seniors facing this sort of mobility challenge is the use of a personal mobility scooter or power wheelchair to facilitate easier access to whatever local areas one may have a need or desire to get to without any great difficulty. Think about it: if you were someone still of sound mind who found him or herself being less and less able to get out and about easily, this physical restriction would not mean that you no longer had any desire to keep up your social commitments or at the least remain a social animal in touch with the community around you. A well chosen elderly scooter that allowed you to still keep in touch with that community would clearly make a huge difference in your life, so if you know of someone who is facing a similar dilemma maybe it is time to help make them aware of the variety of senior scooter out there and the possible freedom that the right one could bring.
